Just curious if any other 7.3L owners have had to replace their High Pressure Oil Pump?
Spoke to my mechanic today who specializes in Super Duties. He says he is seeing quite a few HPOP's needing to be replaced on the 7.3L.
I had a massive oil leak around a year ago that ended up being the seals failing. However not so lucky this time, he says the pump housing is cracked and leaking.
Anyone else see this problem, and if so did you go with an OEM HPOP or aftermarket?
Did you get this fixed? If so how much did it cost you? I had this problem last night , blew oil everywhere while driving and it stalled on the highway.. Towed it to the dealer, he said he thinks high pressure pump.
I did get this fixed. I did end up replacing the pump. I have a rock solid mechanic that I trust that is not a dealership mechanic. We ended up having to replace the pump because the area that was leaking is the only spot on the HPOP that cannot be resealed. He even spoke to Ford and several other area mechanics to ensure he was certain of this.
Before you let them replace the whole pump make sure its not seals or hoses leading to and from the pump. That is by far the more common point of failure, not the pump itself, especially if they have never been replaced.
There is a way to fix the leak on the "non-serviceable" port of the HPOP. It does take some patience and precision, but it can be done. My HPOP is leaking and I just ordered this kit:
I do believe the "non-serviceable" portion of the HPOP is the one that was leaking. He told me that he nor any of the mechanics he associates with have been able to pull that plug out and get everything back in, he says the interior parts pretty much fall apart (Almighty FORD even says that, but of course they are going to right?). lol
This guy has been rock solid for over 3 years. He has saved me lots of $$$.
If he isn't able to do it I will call it ignorance, nothing more.
That would be great if you can get it apart and back together with the new seal. I would be interested in knowing how it turns out.

The liability they have if anything shifts or doesn't go well with that repair will come out of their (or Ford's) pocket, so it's understandable that they wouldn't touch it with a 10ft pole. On the other hand, if it's your money and you've got nothing to lose, why not spend a few dollars before you spend hundreds.
