Motor Swap?

I've been contemplating and researching these options for some time. I just wanted to hear some opinions and suggestions from those more experienced than me. My 351 runs okay but is tired. I want to increase the power significantly, but I don't want to break the bank. My bronco is a 92 with 209k on it. It is no longer a daily driver so mpg isn't a huge deal. The options I'm considering are as followed

Do a mass air conversion and stroke the 351

Do a mass air conversion and swap in a mild 460bb

Power stroke it

Cummins 4bt

Cummins 6bt

I know I'm kind of all over the place, but once I start I'm going to finish what I decide to go with. The weight and cost of the diesels are a definite concern. I do eventually want to put dana 60s under this beast at some point. I'm still at least a year out from being able to begin this project, but I want to saving and getting items as I can until then.

The first option is likely the least expensive. The rest of them require transmission mods/swaps. The diesel conversion has been done and I'm sure plenty of folks will chime in with opinions and comments about it. Until I get into a bio-diesel co-op, I'll stick with gasoline and a propane kick.

ID look for a 90-91 12 v cummings.....easy to wire and mucho aftermarket support.

Id also look for a complete truck even a 2wd. you get alot of small pieces youll need plus the d60 or 70 rear axle . i believe the 91 came with a turbo and intercooler but im not positive ..

then you can part or scrap the rest of the truck.

if your set on the diesel.

Are there issues with the powerstrokes? I keep hearing that I should go with a cummins. Are they that much easier? I dig the sound the big stroke makes.

the 7.3 are stout engines....but every one runs the cummings if you want big power ..plus theres tons more after market support out there for the cummings.

ive owned both a (2002) 7.3 and the (2004.5) 5.9.

the cummings was easier to work on and cheaper to build.

I saw a bronco on ebay last month from florida...

it had the 7.3 and the dana 60/ sterling axles in it.

if you had a ford donor already then that would be the way to go.

the poster claimed 22 mpg i think.

Sounds like I can't go wrong with a Cummins. I got the manual from fordcummins.com and was wondering why they would swap a powerstroke for a cummins. Easieto work on and make power makes since

If you go with the 6.9 or 7.3 IDI Everything fits perfect. Any of the diesel fords from 83 up to 94 will work but the most pianless way would be with a 92 to 94 as they were the same basic truck. The wiring would swap striaght out as well as the rad support. I used an 86 4x4 but I have a decent handle on wiring and I am a welder/fabricator by trade. One more thing, the IDI engines are a lot easier and way cheaper to work on than most others and with some mods they make some real respectable power.

I hear you on 6.9/7.3. The only that makes me question using them is that the town I live in is infested with dodge rams. That is also reason enough to not use a cummins I guess. I'm just not sure if I'll be able to find a decent running older Ford truck, but we'll see. I will have research what the older IDI's are capable of. I'm kind new to the diesel thing.

You should take a look in the 6.9/7.3 pre powerstroke forum. The guys there know thier stuff and are great people. They can give you a lot of info on what these old IDI's are capable of.

A neighbor of mine's , son just purchased a 87 ext cab 4x4 6.9 with 250k miles on it in washington state. the truck was a little rough but the 4x4 worked.

he towed a 36' fifth wheel with it from las vegas to washington. it worked fine.

I couldnt belive it.
