I was about to order a new air filter for my 97 3.0 Ranger, the filter currently installed is a FA 1673, the internet tells me that one does not fit my ranger, apparently FA 1616 is the correct one. this confused me slightly.
is this a case of "this filter fits after all"? or do i somehow have a different air filter box?
On some Rangers the engine makes a difference. The owners manual for my 87 shows motorcraft filter FA-1000 for the 2.0 liter & FA-1031 for the 2.3 & 2.9 liter engines.
Have a look in your Owner Manual, if you don't have it, one can be down loaded at no cost by following the Owner Manual Download link posted in the Tech Info thread Miscellaneous section.
Okay, my legwork here means nothing, but I have an old NAPA filters book and I did a cross-reference.
The Motorcraft FA1673 crosses over to a NAPA 6659. The FA1616 crosses over to a NAPA 6416.
The NAPA 6659 has the dimensions of 7.913 height, O.D. dimensions of T-5.283, B-6.866 and an I.D.
of B-3.407.
The NAPA 6416 has the dimensions of 7.898, T-5.040, B-6.866 and B-3.300.
My book shows the FA1673 is for Winstars, the FA1616 is for the Rangers.
If the filter wasn't fitting the air box properly, I'd remove the MAF sensor & clean it from both sides with CRC MAF sensor spray cleaner. Be careful if just driven to let the MAF sensor cool before spraying it with the cold solvents, so as not to thermally shock it. Keep it squeaky clean when reinstalling, so as not to get the just cleaned calibrated heated element dirty & corrupt its airflow measurement PID to the computer & have the fuel trim messed up, all a vicious circle for us to consider when we open things up for repair, or maintenance. More thoughts for consideration
new filter finally arrived and as far as i can see the only difference between fa1616 and fa1673 is that 1616 have a slightly bigger filter, not by much.
So if you have to there is no issues with using a fa1673 filter other than alightly less airflow.
