I have never pulled an engine and transmission before and need some advise. I have a '54 F-100 with the 223 6 cylinder and the 4-Speed Synchro transmission. As best I can tell this is the original engine and transmission and it doesn't look like they have ever been out of the truck. I am pulling the engine out for a rebuild and I have heard it is best to pull the transmission at the same time. I have the whole front clip off the truck so I have plenty of room to pull it straight out. My question is do I need to remove the shift lever to get the thing out and if so, how does the lever come off? I have the shop manual but it is not clear to me how it comes off. It looks like I have to remove the whole top of the tranny cover which I would rather not do. I have removed the cover on the floorboard and am hoping I can just tilt the engine and transmission as I pull it out but I not sure how difficult that is. Thanks for helping a new guy!
The transmission should be pretty much like the one in my '48-52 trucks, the half ball cover with the hole that the shifter comes out of unscrews and then the shifter will come out. Make sure the truck is in neutral before removing the shifter, it'll make it easier to install later.
Thank you for quick reply, I thought it had to be pretty simple but the diagram in my manual is not as clear as yours. There is a lot of gunk on top of the transmission that I need to clean off.
I removed a 6cyl. engine and 4 speed trans. from my 54 f250. I found it easier to remove trans. seperate first after removing the shift lever. I used a trans. jack. you are dealing with a lot of weight here and to try to rig the complete assembly on balance is more than I wanted to wrestle with. good luck F250 RED
Any tips on how to get the half ball cover to loosen? I have tried to turn by hand but it won't budge. I can't see how any tools could be used to get a grip on it. I appreciate any help out there. The trans is a T-98.
Thanks

If the ball cover sits outside the tower as in the picture it should un screw. If it sits inside it must be pushed down slightly and turned counter cloclwise slightly to release.
If all else fails unbolt the entire top and pull it off.
