having read all the post on EGR delete must say I haven't A clue what you guys are recommending. I have twisted wrenches on gas motor all my life, and built more then a few both car and motorcycle. Now I'M thinking I should sell my 2004 Lariat F350 with 14000 Miles and take the loss on a Truck that doesn't have a scratch on it because now there is nothing wrong with it. At 70yrs old I no longer like making repairs on the road and can't afford to pay to have a dealer do studs and turbo on the road.Money is now hard to come buy.I have no mods on my truck but have already had dealer replace the EGR and the turbo. By the way If I'm not understanding what you are recommending many guys must be. I was a dealership mechanic for 10yrs but have no diesel smarts. The coolant cleaner sounds like a good Idea but then some say not so.John
I am guessing your 14000 miles is a typo. If not, put a coolant filter on it and monitor your eot/ect temps. As long as they are within 14 degrees you will be fine. On the other hand, if you have an 04 with 140000 miles there are some other things you might need to look at.
Also No warranty left. Love the Truck but worry about being stranded. I thought about a extended warranty but for the cost, thinking might as well buy a hoist and pull cab and replace studs myself tools not a problem, just think that would be easier than pulling front clip. My plan was to buy the Diesel because it would last me the rest of my life and pull my Fifth Wheel when I retired. When it right its great.
It sits in my pole barn 90% of the time I brought it to pull my fiftth wheel. Yes it has 14,000 not 140,000 miles It still smells new. I do drive it to heat it up and lube the hubs 4x4.
Your biggest fear should be with the turbo. These engines have a VGT turbo that has internal vanes that move changing the boost. Not running the engine for a long time or not romping on it once in a while causes the vanes to stick. I would absolutely recommend you put a coolant filter on it asap. You have not hurt the oil cooler yet at 14000 miles. Head gasket issues are really head bolt issues. The ARP studs make the problem much less likely to occur. At the miles you have on the truck I would not hesitate to just change the bolts to studs one at a time and not pull the heads. You mentioned buying a hoist versus pulling off the front. I have done the head studs both over the engine which sucks and by pulling the front off. I would pull the front off if I do them again, 2 hours and the front is out of the way. You still have to deal with the A/C box on the passenger side. Just curious, Where is your Lincoln Park?
Thanks Rikatic Plan on doing that this summer and also plan new exhaust, and was planning on deleteing the EGR & Oil cooler now not so sure on the EGR & Cooler, sure hate to sell I love the truck. John
Ricratic Lincoln Pk Is just outside Detroit MI. I'M glad to hear that the studs can be replaced without replacing the head gaskets because that's the way I was going to do them. I'M recovering from hip surgery and have to wait before crawling over that beast. Most people told me I must replace the gaskets and I couldn't believe that. My truck is at my upstate house collecting dust in the barn had it out 2 weeks ago and drove it for 25 miles. Rebuilding the Turbo doesn't scare me but do try to keep it from locking up. John

Still willing to wrench at 70!!!! You are one tough sob. Hope I am as able and willing as you at 70...
At roughly 2,400 miles a year that truck is going to last you at least 70 more years. It is a rare treasure to find someone who keeps a vehicle at low mileage and in such great shape.. Wish I was closer i'd give ya hand doing that headstud change. Like rickatic said just work the turbo once in a while. If it does stick there is a great write up in the tech. section on cleaning the turbo..
Doug Thanks for the offer,I wish you lived closer I'm in pretty good shape but it takes me longer to do things now the mind is willing but some times it writes checks the body has a tough time cashing. I still like wrenching on motors and building race bikes, I'm working on a Dragbike now that I used to race hoping to have it ready for this summer. I'M lucky have my own shop so all I have pay for are Parts. My Truck looks like new and I will keep it that way. John

Now that is an exhilerating sport.. Drag raced my Kawasaki 900 stock 30 yrs. ago. did it in 10.3 sec. That was one of my highlight events.. Gave it up for my wife at that time along with the '73.5 Cutlass Supreme 455. Hurst Olds special edition.(damn was that stupid) the bikes I see running on tv.today are way faster. Hope you have winning runs this year.......
Doug Thats what I'M putting back together. The bikes today are running in the 6sec range when we Quit we were running in the low 8sec, my rider died last year I'm going to play around myself on this one. John
Thanks Rickatic for the offer I will keep that in mind. Do you recommend EGR & Cooler delete I understand why A Dealer Mechanic would not because of EPA.
