Hey, i've got a 1996 f-250 5.8. its been running rough for a few months now and finally died the other day. if you let it sit for a few minutes it will half a$$ start then stall. after that, you cant really get it running again unless you let it sit again. just installed new fuel pumps in both tanks.
the truck will run off starting fluid. so i've pushed aside the idea of it being injectors. possibly fuel pressure regulator? it has plenty of spark. just really lacking fuel im guessing. wish i had a fuel pressure gauge.
if it is the regulator, where is it located on that motor?
Does not sound good for the computer. Try pulling the codes off of it.
Does the fuel pumps run all the time the key is on with the engine not running?
You could also check the injectors with a node light but I will think you will find that they are not firing.
Ok, so i've replaced the regulator. when you would crank it over, gas was spraying into the vacuum port. so now that is new. still wont start though. and where the hell is the OBDII port? i thought it was in the center of the dash, but i cant find the darn thing! the truck is driving me nuts... def need some help
two more questions... only have OBDII scanner.... so how do you go about jumping out and reading the codes without one. and where is the computer located on this truck?
ok, so i did the test to get the codes... like i said, the fuel pump doesnt shut off and the service engine light doesnt blink. then i tried the test light idea and nothing there. either there are no codes or the computer is screwed?
Sounds like the computer is bad.
The PCM relay is working or the pumps would not be working.
There are no fuses in the circuit just fuse links and if they were open the pumps would not run.
The computer has to have ground or the fuel pump relay would not make.
The only thing else is no power to power pins of the computer from the power relay but that is unlikely.
Take the computer out and open it up and I am sure you will see the problem.
Alright, so im still having the same issues with this thing. here is a quick list of what i've done to the truck so far:
-new rear tank
-two new fuel pumps
-coil
-plugs
-wires
-cap
-rotor
-fuel pressure regulator
-switched out computer from one in an identicle truck
It still seems that im not getting fuel out of the injectors. Is there a way i can test the injectors with a test light. I'm pretty sure i'm doing it correctly. one side of the injector plug has ign power and crank power. the other has nothing at all. hmm. help?

The other side should flash a neon test-light when the engine is cranking.
Both side will light the test light with the ignition on and the engine not running.
The computer just grounds one side of the injector to fire it.
If the computer is unplugged you should also light the test light.
Do not ground the other side (non red wire) or you will damage the injector.
