well when my truck is loaded it heats up bad even pulling an empty trailor.it idles rough at start up and when i have the ac on and its always gutless now.the tranny isnt shifting right.new tach sensor i adjusted the fipl to spec.so what im wondering is if i have a fan clutch issue and a timing issue.what do you guys think?oh and the tranny issue i have an idea its leaning towards tha fipl.and the running like crap i think is the timing.when i burp the throttle it does send out black smoke and then a puff of white.
Just how hot is it running? Hot engine can make the transmission run hot too, so that may explain the shifting problems. No tranny temp gauge I assume?
I read in your specs that you are running an electric fuel pump. Is the factory lift pump bypassed? Too much pressure can cause problems with the injector pump, and fuel pressure does affect the timing map.
the factory lift pump was removed and block off plate installed.as long as im not hooked to a trailer it runs nice and cool.but as soon as i put a trailer on it gets hot. i havent let it get too far up it hasnt gotten past the a on normal yet but as soon as i pull over or shut it down it or unhook the trailer it cools right off
"NO" on the normal range, that doesn't seem too bad. Isn't that still at the half way mark? My 6.9 will run between 1/2 and 3/4 on the gauge regardless of loading.
How recent is your thermostat? Are you able to verify that its the correct type and is opening at the correct temperature?
I see why you are concluding a bad fan clutch. Its possible that its also a restricted radiator, but unless you are seeing a whole mess of solder bloom in the top, thats probably not a problem. To rule the rad out as a possible problem, you can (carefully) feel the bottom of it to see if its getting hot when the truck is running hotter than normal. If its cold or cool to the touch then you know you have a blocked rad.
If this gets bad enough it might even prevent enough heat from reaching the fan and cause it to engage too late relative to coolant temperature.
I've heard that when things get hot, you are supposed to hear the fan go off like an airplane propeller under the hood. I've never heard mine do that hot but it will for the first few miles when cold.
You could also try pulling over next time its running hot and pop the hood to see if the fan is pulling air.
A small pocket IR thermometer comes in really handy for stuff like this.
i recently flushed the radiator for preventative reasons and i didnt get nothing out of it to raise an eye about.also every once in a while i can hear the fan spinning after i shut the truck off.its almost a bad bearing sound.thats another thing that pointed me toward the fanclutch.so i guess ill ebay a fan clutch and a tranny cooler to take a little strain off the cooling system.sound like a good start?
