E350 hpop location/access?

Hood or Doghouse? I did the search thing.

I've had what I believe to be a leaking hpop on my 02 e350 for quite a while. I had the franchised dealership next door to work check it out when I also developed a shimmy imediately after the last tire rotaion. They told me the rear main was leaking as well as the hpop. They also claimed that my steering damper had a leak and there is a service bulletin on my steering box and it needs replacing. They wanted to overnight order $2300 worth of parts. Steering damper??!!

I took it straight to a local tire shop whose diagnosis was one tire that had been relocated to the left front during the rotation had too much radial runout causing a squirm. Anyhow...

I want to have a go at this myself. How much of an a$$ pain is this job on a van and which end provides better access to the hpop?

Both ends.

Pretty easy job but it can be very messy. The hardest part is getting the drive gear bolt out (from the front).

18mm bolt behind the oval cover....which is behind the exhaust backpressure sensor.
Two 10mm bolts hold the pump on (from the back side) but the fuel filter housing is in the way.

When that bolt is completely backed out of it's thread, does it extend out of the housing far enough to grab with your hand, or is it best to have a magnet handy?

Its easy enough to get out. I stuffed a few rags between the gear and front edge of the housing when I changed mine just because.
By the way Dan, how was your trip? from the sounds of your few posts you are happy with the PHP chip.
