2004 f250; I just bought this and it had Warn manual lockout hubs on it. If I locked hubs, I could not engage 4w Hi when moving. I took apart passenger side hub and the brass piece that spring goes up against at rear had pieces broken off. I removed pieces and because I needed truck quickly,, I took it to my ford garage. They checked everything out and said the problem was the lockout hub and they could only replace the hubs , not rrepair broken part. I told them to replace hub. When I picked it up, they told me they had replaced both sides. I see that they replaced the hubs with hubs that say "locked" and "auto" Old ones said "free" When hubs are locked, I can shift from 2W Hi to 4W Hi moving with no problem. Am I wrong or should hubs "automatically" lockin when I shift to 4 W Hi? How should they work, can I shift to 4 W Hi while moving and hubs are in auto mode?\
Dave
It sounds like they replaced the Warn hubs with Ford hubs. In auto mode, the hubs will receive a vacuum signal to lock, the transfer case will engage spinning the driveshaft and the collar in the hub will seat into both sets of splines engaging 4wd. Most owner's guides say you can do this up to 45mph as part of the Shift On The Fly system.
Does that answer most of your question? Also welcome.
Yes they are ford hubs. This truck came from the factory with manual lock out hubs and manual 4 wd shift. Did they put the wrong hubs on? Hubs cost me $589.96. Should they have put on manual locking hubs? If I try to shift into 4 w Hi with manual shifter at any speed, it will grind, if in auto, if I lock them, it works fine..
If they charged that much for parts they probably put the stock automatic ones on. They shouldn't have the auto feature unless they are the shift on fly type. Do you have the switch inside that says 4low, 4hi, and 2wd? It should be all auto ESOF or all manual.
No switches; just floor shifter for 4 wd engagement. So; they put the wrong lockout hubs on? They should be lock and free mode lockout hubs.
Would anyone know the correct part numbers? They installed 1C3Z*3B396*96.
See the Ford service manager. Make sure he doesn't have the same tech (if you can even call him that) work on it again. They should have checked your type of system (ESOF or manual) before installing and at least should have noticed when road testing that they put the wrong ones in. Most likely didn't road test either. See if the Manager can cut you a break on the price seeing as you have had to deal with the BS and make sure they road test. If not consider another dealership.
I agree with Dave. They are pretty easy to change also. You could demand all your money back and get some great aftermarket ones for less money and have them on in 15 minutes (that's what I would do).
Talked with Ford dealer today. They told me after looking up the part numbers that both the auto/lock and free/lock hubs are virtually the same except the wording of auto and free. Cost is the same also. Since my truck has a manual shifter, the hub will not receive the vacumn signal to auto engage and work just like the "free/lock" hubs. The reason I got auto/lock hubs was that is what they had in stock and Ford says they can use either.
As much as I like the ESOF system,,, Since you have a manual system I would agree with BobbyDiesel71 and EXv10,,, return the "gold plated" hubs Ford installed and install a pair of Warn hubs yourself. 5 minutes on each side and your done.
They (Ford service) should have been more considerate with you and suggested an aftermarket hub considering the price Ford charges for the auto hubs.
I will be impressed if the Ford service/parts department takes the hubs back straight up. I would be even more impressed if they don't charge a restocking fee if they do actually take them back.
