my 2004 f350 c/c 6.0 had the egr replaced in oct 2007.i now have a surge, and hesitation and a occational flat spot from a start.so last night i took out the egr and cleaned the soot off started it up and go9t it warm to drive and did a road test, everything seems fine.my questions are is 21 months too long before cleaning the egr?? is that the signes for a dirty egr and thats all thats required to fix the surgeing??and why in the hell does this need to be cleaned anyway????or is there something else wrong with this fine ford prduct.thanks for your time....................Paul
Do you think you let it idle frequently? (bad idea)
Do you make a lot of short trips? (not a good thing)
Some guys do clean them as routine maintenance. Some trucks do tend to get dirty more than others. Some of us think a fuel additive is a good preventive measure, but I cannot prove it.
Unfortunately, I don't have any absolutes for you.
Like Bpounds said about routine maintenance. I pull mine every time I do an oil change and scrub it. To me it just seems to be worth the 20-30 minutes to pull it get it good and clean and reistall. Hope to do the delete before to long to avoid this in the future, but I will most likely Fabricate my own delete kit rather than pay the $600 for a prefabbed kit.
If you open her up and "drive it like you stole it" this will help prevent some EGR problems. Also I think one of the more recent flash upgrades eliminates EGR operation while idling. Maybe someone can confirm this.
You might also want to consider a CCV reroute, an upgraded EGR valve, and switching to synthetic oil if you don't use it already.
Some will say that the only way to prevent EGR problems is to delete it.
My personal maintenance schedule calls for a EGR cleaning every 25K miles.
""every 25K miles"".the truck had 67000 km in 2007 now 87500km my 2week rotation alows 14 days per month of driving..""Do you think you let it idle frequently? (bad idea)""long enough to warm up/cool down thats all ""Also I think one of the more recent flash upgrades eliminates EGR operation while idling. Maybe someone can confirm this."" my warrenty is up in Sept 2009 so the last visit to the dealer i ll get all the flashes done. Thanks for the replies i guess at oil change time i ll be cleaning the egr...that soot is hard to clean of my hands...i knew i should have put the latex on but didnt..........Paul
dry soot i just had the 6.00 hose on the egr cooler replaced so the dealer looked for the signs of oilcooler, egr cooler, head gasket failure and it was the hose on the egr cooler that was the leak
I still have the surge after i drive for 30 min or so at hwy speed and letting it cool dwn i ll get the surge in rpm.i did clean the egr the soot was dry i also use rotella t 15--40 oil since i purchased the truck in late 2007..im stumped other than fuel filters may need a change but there less than 1 yr ago.ive just started to use that fuel attitivr diesel clean grey bottle in the last month maybe that has something to do with the surge????i have less than 1 month before warrenty expires so i want henry ford to fix it ..................Paul
When I first got my 04, I had EGR problems. One day, I remembered I used to tell my howitzer drivers to "drive them like you stole em!" and "Drive them like you hated their guts!". From then on, I drove my F250 like I recommended my drivers did. Since then, I haven't had a problem with my EGR.
Break out yer whip, and kick yer foot into it hard whenever you can! Driving with an egg under the go pedal is fer gassers! Yer burning OIL now! After she's warmed up, kick her in the butt and drive her hard! When you put her away at the end of the drive, don't put her away wet. Let her idle down for a few minuites to let her cool down before shutting off the engine.
I've had the same problem with my 04 F250 for a while now - new EGR worked well for a while, cleaning it works alright for a month or so.. I finally just unpluged it and the problem went away. I just bought the EGR blockoff kit and head studs - those are going on in a couple weeks.. I'd prefer to do the EGR "delete" but here in CO we still have emission tests on diesels so it has to look legal.
Well the word from ford is they ttried to reflash the puter to relieve the problem but no luck..they found 2 bad injectors, some of of elec. thing that cotrols the injectors and anothe elec. thingy that controls the injector pump......now here is my question does ford replace all 8 injectors or only the faulty ones as he kept saying that they will replace the 2 injectors which as ive seen in the past doesnt work as you then are chasing the rest to replace as they fail.......i quickly told the tec that i work one tug boats with 2 main eng the size of a f150 that may have 16 injectors and when abad one shows up the engineers replace all 16 as it eliminates a break down later on....so ive taken the truck back to use for the week to go and do some mx ing with the kiddies and return monday for repairs so im wanting to know if all 8 will be replaced or am i going to have a arguement on monday .....................thanks...............Paul
Unfortunately they will only replace the faulty injectors. Sounds like they replaced the FICM (fuel injector control module) and maybe an ICP (injection control pressure) sensor and installed new programming which should help the injector failures.
