My 97 PSD is getting a little tired at 368,000 miles and on top of a tired turbo, now has a bad injector. I don't want to throw more money at it, as it already has some cylinder pitting, which seems to be ok for now, but who knows how long.
A new torbo and a used injector will be close to $1000 Canadian. An I can pick up engines around that mark.
Looking at 2, both out of E450's ....a 96 with 113,000km (70,000m) with all accessories for $1000. And a 2000 with 300,000km (180,000M) for $700.
The lower miles and the fact that it comes with the starter make the 96 a better deal. Unless theres a compelling reason (besides lower cost) to go with a 2000.
Well, I'm very intersted in this question but don't really know all the differences. I'm sure the smart guys will chime in soon. Down the road I hope to find a nice 7.3 to rebuild. Then when all the breath (hopefully far far down the road) is out of my 7.3 I'll have built one ready to go in.
I think the 2000 will have split shot injectors instead of single. I suspect there will be more electrical compatability issues with the 2000.
Yes, the 2000 will have AD code injector, split shots. But from what I read, they will work with a single shot driver module.
I also assume i would have to retain alot of my wiring including the UVC. And most of my accessories...
As far as i know the turbos off the E series are "better", as in come in earlier...is this correct?

yes I think your correct...
My initial reaction would be to go with the lowest milage one u can find. But maybe it depends on what u want to build it for. Looking for big HP or just another 300,000 miles of daily reliability. Does the 2000 option include the intercooler pipes and y-pipe?
I would think the 70,000 motor is barely broken in and if it was maintained properly it should be in great shape with lots of life left. It would be the better one to go with to prevent some unexpected problems in your rebuild. If u just want to drop in a replacement motor, I wouldn't even consider the higher milage if the difference is only $300 for the lower mileage.
But again, I'm in the same boat as you - still trying to get all the facts together. When I do this, I'd like to go for some big power upgrades.
I'd go with the lower mileage '96 motor. It'll match yours for sure (unless you have a cali model that came with split shot injectors). And probably will last you longer.
i vote 96! i have a buddy who dropped an 02 engine and a 6 speed in his dually, he wishes after all the work he had the money back and a stick of dynomite lol. he had to totally make the wiring harness to get a lot of stuff to work...
I am 40 minutes east of Ottawa.
$300 for a set of 8 is very good. Used I assume. Best I found is $100 for one.
I priced a rebuilt turbo, with hte banks compressor housing, @ $650US...and did a rough conversion.
Plan right now is to get a single injector, swap it so I can keep driving the truck. And look at and hopefully buy the $1000 engine this week and swap it asap.
yeah it was a fluke I was actually looking at a tailgate the guy had for sale and seen the truck in the back yard and convinced him to sell the injectors lol took them out myself.
I have no clue what condition they are in but I could not afford the down time during the rebuild so this is the way to go now to save for the rebuild
yeah the shipping and exchange is the killer for us guys up here I get my stuff shipped to the border there is a trading post there it is only 60km away and worth driving there
Just brought the "new" engine home. 113,000km on it out of a 96 E-450 bus.
Accessories, brackets, valve covers, oil cooler, oilpan and intake ducting is different. It will all come off tonight or tomorrow. Then it'll get cleaned some and hopefully go into the truck on the weekend of the 16/17.
Does anyone know if the exhaust manifolds and piping to the turbo are the same? They look like it, just want to be sure.
While its out may be a good time for a larger downpipe.......gonna price them. Recommendations?
Anything else I should be aware off that may be different on a van motor?
And as far as the old engine goes, if I'm hard up for $$ I'll sell it. Otherwise I'll keep it to rebuild myself in future. Nice to have spare parts too, like injectors and turbo if you need to send cores to have them rebuilt and dont want downtime.
The exchange rate sucks. i have parts shipped to the UPS store in Ogdensburg and pick them up there. Saved brokerage fees, and pricey shipping in Canada.
For the downpipe, if you want a cheap but good one go to Beans Diesel Performance and get the MBRP 3" DP. That's what i got and I'm happy with it.
For a better one contact Dale at Tymar. He sells 3-3.5" and 3-3.5-4" DP's and will also ceramic coat them. But you'll be paying a bit more for those...
