Ok, I did some digging, and I'm still not 100% sure on this, but I'd say that most Fords had the wide ratio (w/ 6.69:1 1st). However, I've found multiple references to there also being a close ratio gearbox used by Ford. I know for a fact that both Dodge and Chevy used both close & wide ratio NP435's, but I can't find a solid source to verify or deny that Ford did also.

That would make a lot of sense, as diesels don't work real well with wide ratios. However, I did find an older thread on this forum that talked about them being in '70's trucks too and I've found it mentioned a few other times elsewhere. What we need is someone like NumberDummy to speak up about this if he can find the info.
