Check coolant level now!
I'm not accusing anybody of neglecting to do this, just putting this out there. Buddy of mine with a job #2 truck just had a new engine put in his truck. The EGR cooler blew it's seal and dumped coolant into cylinder #8 which put the engine in hydro lock, bent the rods, etc....
I have heard of this happening twice now. If the engine gets low on coolant, the first thing to go is the EGR coolers. My dealer's shop foreman just told me this.
The bugger is, there really is not a "low coolant" message or any kind of a warning indicator. Some guys out there have had problems like this where the engine will seemingly overheat without any warning whatsoever.
The guy at my dealer told me that the EGR coolers are made of stainless steel with an epoxy sealer at the seams. If the coolant gets low the epoxy breaks down and the seal blows.
Enjoy the rest of the summer everybody!
