hey fellas i know this is old as dirt but i have a few questions that were never hit on but deal with the same thing. i have an 89 f150 that formerly had the efi system. im wanting to swap in the ds2 but will the factory gauges and everything work the same with that system ?? i have an accel vacuum adv. dis. with a pertronix coil. the engine originally came out of my 85 any help is greatly appreciated
Everything should work fine. the only gauge that should possibly be affected is the tach. I have not looked at a wiring diagram in a while, but I think the tach gets a signal from the duraspark module.
hey bud thanks for the info i have another question. ive got my new dizzy. and fuel pump wired to the key switch. the truck had the efi obviously now if i leave that system intact will all the gauges work the same ?
I'm not sure I understand your setup. Are you running efi or a carb? if you have an electric fuel pump that used to feed an efi setup then you are probably going to need a fuel pressure regulator or you can run a mechanical fuel pump...but I am not answering the question.
Water temp gauge comes from a coolant sensor. mine is at the back passenger side of the head on my 300. this should not be affected by any changes to the type of fuel deliver system you use.
Oil pressure gauge is in the drivers side of the block of my 300. this should not be affected by any changes to the type of fuel deliver system you use.
fuel level sensor is in the gas tank. this should not be affected by any changes to the type of fuel deliver system you use.
volt meter I think gets a signal from the alternator. not positive about that. this should not be affected by any changes to the type of fuel deliver system you use.
speedometer gets a signal from the transmission. this should not be affected by any changes to the type of fuel deliver system you use.
the tachometer is the unknown. I'm not sure if it gets a signal from the dizzy or from the ignition control module, I would have to look at a wiring diagram. all you would have to do to make it work is find the wire that comes from your tach and connect it to the wire that sends a signal to the tach.
so if you have a blue wire coming from your tach, and your new induction system sends a signal to the tach with a green wire, you just have to connect those two wires.
hey randy heres what ive done i have wired in my coil, dizzy, aftermarket carb electric fuel pump, and all the sensors all of this was wired into the efi wiring harness and it all seems to work. the truck has not been cranked yet. i had trouble with it flooding everytime i tried. i have the regulator set at 6 psi, should i tune it down more? its running to an eddy 1406. so my ? is has anybody done this successfully before ? and would it be worthh swappin in the dsII?
I would make sure you are getting spark first. pull a spark plug and stick it back in the plug wire and hold the threaded part of the spark plug to the engine and see if it sparks when you crank the motor.
If that is good, double check the float level on your carb. if that check out, try to lower the pressure from your fuel pump. 6psi should be ok though.
You might have to put in the DS2 though. the if you still have the efi computer running, it might be controlling the timing. guess we will find out.
would the ecm be able to control timing if im running an aftermarket dizzy and can coil set up ? its an accel street billet wired to a pertronix flamethrower 2 coil. i have a power and a ground run to the coil and im getting spark but its having trouble turning over?
OK I'm confused here, are you using the existing harness minus the computer for this swap out or are you going with an earlier Duraspark II harness under the dash? Am thinking of trying this conversion on my 85 Bronco but don't want to replace the complete under dash harness,is it just the outside harness that needs changed? and if so how to you adapt it to the 85 TFI main harness? The rest is easy, just the main harness is baffling me!
On my '86 Bronco once the EEC was unbolted and disconnected from the harness, the harness pushed through into the engine bay and that was it. Lost everything connected to it and replaced the distributor; the ignition pigtails just unplugged from the EEC harness and right into a DSII module. No worries. I don't think I had to splice one wire.
Ok, I appreciate the info. I think what I'm going to do then is go to the wrecking yard and find both an 85 EEC IV and an 82 with DuraSpark II and see if I can do the swap over on them ( for experience ) and if successful just buy the stuff then to do mine. Also buy the stuff to convert my 71 4x4 with the 300 into a duraspark II system instead of the points I'm constantly having to reset.
