I don't think there that hard, I did them on my now sold 97. Other than basic tools the only special tool you will need is a ball joint press which you can get a loaner one from Advanced Auto or Auto Zone, basically pay for then return for a full refund. If you do some searching here there are some good step by step instructions.

Here's the unofficial ball joint thread

Check your end links while you are in there. Noticed mine today doing the hubs - last guy that did them over-tightened the nuts and cracked the rubber.

i wish i got that kinda mileage outta my lower ball joints on my 98 expy. i'm going on my 3-4 set with only 128,000 mile on the clock. i just wish i knew why it eats them so much. my other trucks never were that bad and i was much much harder on them. i baby this thing compared to thos other trucks.

got my lowers done yesterday , was hard but not really that bad , used a ball joint press that i had to borrow from autozone ( worked awsome ) also put in my passanger side axel ( feels good to have 4x4 back again ) and did a U joint in the front driveshaft ( pain in the neck ) deffinatly made a big diffrence , my step dad helped me out alot ( he works for roush ) he said a good rule of thumb is every other oil change grab your grease gun and shoot some grease in the lowers ( if hey got grease points , wich if there not original they should have them ) , our lower ball joints dont hold grease very well and thats why there failing so early that makes a huge diffrence on how long they last and if you think about it greasing them should only take a min or 2 so its cheep insurance, mine were so bad they were about to fall threw ( 203xxx miles and they were deffinatly the originals so you can imagine how bad they looked )
