Its the small one that hangs under the dash over the xsmn tunnel. Not the one that goes all the way acrossthe underside of the dash.
It has 3 wires.A black one that goes to the compressor. Then a red and black one.If I hook up a hot wire to the black it works and I get pwer coming from the red wire also.Turn the wires around and get nothing.
Any idea how the red & black are supposed to be hooked up
chaser1602, In many times on autos the red wire is the hot wire and black ground. It is different in house wire where the black is hot and white is neutral.
Being your AC is aftermarket it could need a closer inspection to see where the wires go, to see if there are multi speeds on fans and or other options.
Are the controls on the unit or does it look like there should be a control switch elsewhere?
Ford offered three different dealer installed "Hang-On" A/C's for 1965/66 F100/350's.
1) The "economy" version had an all white plastic case, said Polar-Aire on the bezel. There are four 5" round registers.
2) The Rotunda A/C has a chrome/painted bezel with four 5" round registers. Rotunda was the name Ford once used for accessories.
3) Deluxe A/C. This unit's bezel was chrome/painted (argent-1965 / charcoal gray-1966) and is identical to what was used on 1965/66 Mustangs/Falcons/Fairlanes.
i got a problem with my 2000 so I will havr to get bck with you on that.Mine has a black body with a chrome bezel and 4 registers.Fan control is on the left side and temp control on the right side.Ford emblem top center. A deluxe?

Ford emblem top center. Deluxe
( O o O * O o O )
O = Register / o = switch, blower on left, temp on right / * = emblem.
1966 Mustang/Falcon/Fairlane // 1966 F100/350.
Black is what Ford called charcoal gray. The only difference between this unit and the one used in 1965 is the bezel color.

O K so I am back to this A/C wiring. It seems to be the " deluxe " the way Bill describes it and the way I look at it.3 wires.1 to the comp. 1 red,1black.I hook up hot wire to red I only have the fan working,no compressor.Hot wire to the black wire, fan works and the compressor kicks on.Now what gets me is with the hot wire hooked to the black wire,I have power coming out of the red wire and only the fan works. It is not alot of volts because it doesnt light a test light up very bright. If I try to ground the red wire it is like putting a hot wire to ground(duh).
I would obviously think that the black wire would be the power feed into the unit. But if that were true, the red wire would be ground. But it cant be because it has power backfeeding? out through it
When you do your electrical test, make sure the TEMP switch is on.
If it is off, the fan will be able to run, but the fan switch alone shouldn't send power to the compressor. You need the TEMP switch to be on to send power to the compressor.
At least that is how my old A/C unit like that worked.
If the unit is identical to Mustang then the wiring should connect the same. There are a plethora of Mustang sites with wiring diagrams out there. I could be wrong. (it's happened before)
