Erratic Throttle Input

Brother-in-law gave me a ring while on the road, truck is a 1995 F-350. Anytime he uses his foot while driving the RPM's are all over the place, engine will just take off with no input from the pedal. On cruise control the engine is fine. I told him to check with the nearest dealer on a new throttle pedal assembly and have their Tech do a diagnostics to make sure. He has an appointment tomorrow but they said the unit complete is $900 + ...

Am I on the right track? $900, you gotta be kidding.....

The TPS (throttle position sensor) is expensive ($450), if you can still get one, but $900 is ridiculous. It comes with to things...the TPS and IVS (idle validation switch).
Have him remove it and clean the potentiometer with some electrical cleaner...the windings can get dirty because of where it lives. Check the electrical connections too maybe someone bumped it with their foot. They do wear out but usually it causes a dead spot (TPS) or an erratic idle (IVS)
I haven't heard of anyone having good results from the after market replacements (Dorman ect) Maybe someone will chime in with more info for you.

Thanks guys, the Tech will see it tomorrow to make sure what the problem is. I will probably have bro-in-law limp the truck to me so we can tear it into it here at my shop, then I will visit my friendly parts guy for a discount.

Bout fell off the chair when he said 900, pffft you gotta be kidding.

I realize this is an old thread, but I have a similar situation. I have a 97 and had an issue where it would die after driving in rain for a while. I checked and cleaned and sealed several connections at the recommendation of several members on this site, and last few times it's rained it's done fine. But I noticed my throttle was jumpy a couple weeks ago, and I also noticed the next few days that when I first turned my wipers on, it would cause the rpms to drop. Even with the wipers off though, sometime I can hold my pedal completely steady and the rpms will jump up and down. I have a standard and pull a trailer so it cause the truck to buck around sometimes. Idle is always fine. Usually just occurs after start up and it smooths out after 5 minutes or so. First thing I'm going to do is clean the tps down there like Cuda_Jim said. Anyone else have this problem, any other suggestions if that doesn't work? I'm sure it's electrical since wipers coming on trigger it. Thanks!

Josh
