I have an EDU 100A IDM. I am going to do the 140 V IDM Mod. I have searched a lot of posts, but I would like to clarify one thing- I know I need a 75K resistor, with 1% tolerance. But, which wattage do I use? 1 watt or 1/2 watt? I would rather be on the safe side and know for sure. Thank you.
IDM-100 and IDM-110 use a 75.0k Ohm (75,000 ohm) 1/2 watt 1% tolerance Metal Film resistor.
IDM-120 uses a 73.2k Ohm (73,200) 1/2 watt 1% tolerance Metal Film resistor.
DigiKey sells the needed resistors:
75.0KX (Violet-Green-Black-Red-Brown)
73.2KX (Violet-Orange-Red-Red-Brown)
DO NOT BUY THEM FROM RADIO SHACK. They need to be high quality.
I just did one this morning, haven't tried it yet to see if I screwed it up.
I know now that I need to buy a new teeny tiny soldering iron and/or tip...
I took the board out of the case, used a utility knife and scored the old resistor several times downt he middle. Then when I touched one side with the iron, half came right off. Then the other side, touch w/heat and comes right off.
Most of your time will be spent cleaning the old silicone off the case...
Thanks Jim. I will have to order the resistor because no one seems to have it here in Maryland. The best i could find is 75k metal film 1/2 watt 2% tolerance. Will that work of is the tolerance too low?
I haven't a clue.
The specs I listed above are what was given to me, so that's what I went with. Go to DIGIKEY and get them. 5 resistors (min purchase) shipped to my door in a few days was like $6 or something stupid. Not even worth trying to find them locally.

That's the one.
Some folks run the 1 watt (like me) but it is severe overkill. The stock resistor you are taking out is very small with a minimal wattage rating. In truth the 1/2 is overkill, but it is readily available.
You will also find resistors listed as 2% or +/-1%. They are one and the same. The others are 5% 10% and 20%. These are the ones to avoid.
The resistor you listed is correct.
If you opt for the 1 watt resistor you will have to deal with a chunk that is 1/2"x3/16" and has large gauge wires to deal with. It was very difficult to install and I wish I had chosen the smaller.
rodneywar, I am trying to send you a pm but you don't have that option to do so. Will you pm me with your e-mail address or e-mail me at ian.copeland@dhs.gov please?
Thanks!
