Possible replacement for 6 lug 20" widowmaker wheels
I happened to be at the dock while UPS was making a delivery, and noticed the wheels and tires on the UPS package car (duals on rear axle). Tires are 9R x 22.5, and the wheels were the six lug stud piloted type. The bolt circle looked to be 8.75.
Has anyone looked into these? The tire size is just right for my '60 F600 trucks. I will have to start asking around some truck salvage yards to see if the wheels ever show up. I know UPS has the old trucks cut up and scrapped.
Call around, or even try UPS to see who they might ship their old trucks off to, it can't hurt. Try to find the scrap yards that take the UPS trucks in your location. I would think that they are sold off in a bidding process and there might be numerous yards that bid on them. I don't think the trucks are shipped far to be crushed, the cost would be astronomical. UPS might make agreements that the entire truck be destroyed and not parted out but it's worth looking into.
Not sure about the vans, but I do know the road tractors are cut in half before sale to salvage yards. I worked for a yard in Memphis back in the 80s that bought quite a few of these.
If your tires are any good, you could keep your eyes peeled for some 20" welded, regular split rims. I have found 4 so far for my 63 F600. I have Radials in pretty good shape on my truck so I opted to keep with 20 split rims and not go tubleless.
My old wheels were hub pilot widowmakers
My new (used) wheels are Stud pilot, I had to buy some lug nuts.
A decent price on used, welded, regular Lockring wheels is about 25.00 a piece.
I wasn't real wild about the shape of the hand holes on those two, but I got them both for 20.00 for the pair.
My truck isn't a show piece, I use it.
You can put the word in at your local truck tire shop to keep thier eyes open for some wheels for you, sometimes the shops that specialise in forklift and industrial tires have more of this old stuff laying around.
If you look for 20" used regular lockring splitrims check this side of the wheel where the disk ataches to the wheel and make sure it is welded, and not riveted. The welded wheels are newer and stronger than the old riveted stuff
I know this has been asked before, but didn't someone say that there is a 10 lug wheel with the same bolt circle as the old 5 lug Budd wheels where they would bolt right up to our 5 lug hubs? (and we could put "dummy" studs in the other holes?)
No such luck. In the 1940s Chevies used 10 lug x 7.25" circle in a hub piloted mount. They used all 10 on the rear but only 5 on the front. They used a stiffening plate on the front face to block off the extra holes. The only ones with an 8" circle are the 5 lug style.
And while I'm here, I'm interested in that hub piloted mount on the '63 F-600. I didn't know Ford used a hub piloted system on early 60s big trucks. Clearly it's a hub piloted mount going by the three tabs on the hub. Anybody know when they started that? Stu

Stu, here is a pic of the rear..
[B]My wheels are stamped "63"
The real Widowmaker is wearing the Red shirt
I started working on Tires in 1979, Seems to me most of these old trucks were Stud Pilot, I thought this one rather odd when I bought it.
I demounted two of my rears and mounted the tires on my other two lockring type wheels.
When I went to bolt the inner one on, the stud was too long and bottomed in the inner nut , so I got out my cutoff wheel and took about 3/4 of an inch off the stud (the rears are really long) that solved the bottoming problem, but where the shoulder of the stud comes through the hub, the threads of the inner nut, hit that shoulder before the wheel gets tight. So I need some shorter studs.
I mounted my rear tires back up on the widowmakers for now so I can still use the truck, it was right in the middle of the driveway, I didn't plan on having it broke down there.
Yeah, I saw the February '63 date in your picture. If the truck was truly hub piloted the studs would have all been left hand thread, am I right? And obviously there wouldn't have been any inner nuts originally used because hub piloted mounts use only one set of outer cap nuts/floating washers per corner to hold both rear duals. Those stud shoulders that are in the way of your inner nuts would have just filled dead space in the lug holes of the original wheels. Finding stud piloted studs to replace hub piloted studs might be an issue. Hopefully you've got an OTR parts place near by that can help you match the old ones by size and diameter.
Make sure to keep "the real widowmaker" way clear of that rig until you get this sorted out.
Studs on my truck are all right hand.
The trucks today that are hub piloted are all right hand.
We don't have anything real close to us I'll have to measure the shoulder of the old stud with calipers and go to napa and look through their book and order some.
I've been looking for replacements for my 'widowmakers'. Mine are 1951 5 bolt. I found a set of 8 20" budd wheels and 8 good 8.25x20 highway tires. Unfortunately for me the wheels are six bolt. I noticed these posts and thought I should let everyone know. I'm still waiting for pictures but I'll post them when I get them. The seller is asking $50 a wheel with tire.
I'm thinking of going this route and weld the 6 lugs, and index the 5 holes and drill on the mill at work. And open the hub center on the lathe if needed. But I'm a long ways from that.
jeeptrix, I have some extra 5 hole lockring wheels 20" for you. I needed 5 for my 52 f6 and found 18 so I have more than I need. tires are still on them but not good so should be removed. Pm me if interested. In Utah so may be tough to get to you?
good luck on the other tires, I'm hoping I can find some good used tires local to so I dont have to spend 250 each for new ones.
Btw sounds like a good deal just for the tires and I'm sure you can resell the wheels no problems.
