The list below is currently what I have done to my 1997 4.6 V8 truck. I would like to know if there is anything else before buying a programmer or burning a hole in my wallet that I can do to increase performance/power.
#1 Cold Air Intake
#2 40 series flowmaster exhaust dumped
#3 Cat Delete
#4 Colder Heat Range Spark Plugs
#5 Ford Racing Spark Plug WIres
#6 Electric Fans(no more HP robbing clutch fan)
You could try a TBS that helps a lil bit. also install a tranny shift kit.I have all the up grades that you have with included shift kit and TBS and i just ordered the E-fans from Troyer Performance!! dual 16' that cranks out around 6000 cfm's. that will help keep it cool and give a lil more power then the next step would be a programmer!!! after that if you still want more!!! find a used Supercharger
The fan clutch in mine literally makes my truck crawl. I hate that about this truck more then anything. When it's about 100+ degrees here in Oklahoma and I have the AC going and I have been sitting at a red light...its the worst. Take offs from a dead stop are embarrassing. I have a FIPK K&N intake and a flowmaster 40 series exhaust turned down which helped but I think it needs 4.10 gears to be sufficient. The 3.55's are a joke. It's worse when I have a light load on my 16ft. flatbed.....
The E-Fans work great and were easy to install. I wired it up quick last week so today before work I went back and cut the wiring(power and ground and re-routed them and put wirelooms over the wiring to make it look more stock....I've noticed a small about of power increase definitly from the light...but my truck is in no way a race truck(fast)...but its still better than stock...Im sure thats why most of us are on this forum right...other than FIX IT advice.
go to pull-a-part and find some dual radiator fans from a truck or Van(preferrably FORD)
It'll be hard to find one from a truck cuz of how old they are. I got mine from a Ford Windstar and they nearly bolted right but but the shroud was just slightly smalled so me and my friend rigged it up nice. The left top bolt/screw was about one inch off and we got some half inch tubing and drilled two holes(one for the fans and one for the original bold pattern...we zip tide the bottom and it doesnt budge.....sounds kinda ghetto but it work...I bought the dual fans for $30 and a $30 dollar fan/temp switch kit from advanced auto
Do NOT wast your money on a throttle body spacer! They hurt power and make a little whistle sound and that's it!
If you want more power, you could add long-tube headers,4.10 gears and a programmer. That would make a night and day difference in the way the truck feels.
Also for best performance, you never should never have taken the cats off. On a 4.6L, that probably cost you horsepower where you use it most, and decreased your bottom end torque. When unburned fuel an air enters the catalyst, it expands and speeds up, creating a positive induction that pulls remaining exhaust of you your cylinders, which in turn increases HP and economy. This is why many people report a loss in fuel economy on modern vehicles when they remove the converters. It has nothing to do with backpressure, its all about induction. The cats are only slightly restrictive at extreme high RPM. Unless you have a high stall torque converter, it will not help you because you truck will naturally want to shift long before you get there, and it is difficult to keep it in the new powerband.
I don’t like the TBS I took mine off. I think I lost power with it on. Dollar for dollar you will get the most out of a chip. Huge difference in my 5.4 SuperChip
