Ok, I just installed an msd blaster II coil and a petronix electronic conversion and now cannot get the truck to start. It's a 73 with a 390. It acts like it wants to start whenever I let off of the key. The kit says you need a minimum of 1.5 ohms, and i measured the coil and it has 16ohms. I tried just for fun putting the resistor in and it did not change anything. Please help this is getting frustrating. I removed my points so I did'nt have to adjust them anymore, now I cannot even get the thing to run??
do you have the "Ignitor"Petronix pick-up?
or the "Flame thrower" pick-up?
if you used the Ignitor with the MSD coil you fride the pick-up coil.
MSD coil does not have enough resistance to use with them, you MUST use a stock coil with the Ignitor. you will have to upgrade to the flame thrower pick-up to use with an MSD coil.
We just fried a Ignitor pick up on my Dad's Pontiac 428 HO and used a Petronix Flame Thrower coil with it, and fried the pick-up coil. Had to upgrade to the Flame thrower.
Ok, the resistance was 16 ohms so I did not use the resistor. I wired the red wire on the ignitor to the hot side of the coil along with my electric choke. I wired the black wire to the neg side of the coil along with my tach wire. I had my 12v+ coming from the ignition wired to the + side of the coil. Whenever the key is on I am reading 4 volts at the + side of the coil.
The test for a Pertronix unit is to disconnect the "red" wire from the coil and run a jumper straight to + battery. If the engine starts and runs the voltage is too LOW.
Ditch connecting your electric choke to the coil first of all.
Second the Pertronix needs a FULL 12 volts at all times, start and run. The OEM wiring harness includes a resistance wire to cut down the voltage to 7-9 volts.
The ballast resistor is only needed when you have to drop the volts at the coil. IE 6v coil with a 12v system.
You should have a full 12 volts at the coil.
are you sure the reading on the ohm meter was correct?
Frying the Ignitor pick-up has happened to a few people I know.
When you use the Ignitor pick-up you MUST use a stock coil, simple as that.
Now the Ignitor II and IgnitorIII may be different.
Is the Petronix putting out any type of spark?
Pull a plug and check, or hook up the timing light to see if it has spark
Sorry, I don't know if the above specs show the coil is good or not, but I had a bad MSD Blaster II Coil right out of the box. Thought it was a bunch of things, cause I didn't think a brand new coil could be bad.
Ok, I put the points back in and hooked up the msd coil with the ballast resistor. The truck will start now. It may be like you said and I cannot run this coil with the ignitor system. Well, the points have never let me down so I guess I will be keeping the points. Thanks for all the advice.
