running hot (temp)

95 F250 460 4x2

While pulling my Jeep on my car trailer, I got the exhaust hot enough to melt the plastic on the right fender. I had no power and the temp gauge was climbing. I decided to gut the cat today, I hooked the trailer back up and it ran a little cooler, but not much better.

What else can I do?

Are you throwing any codes, is the loss of power intermittent. When you give it full throttle does it kinda act right.

No codes, power seemed low, but this was the first time at highway speed with the trailer hooked to this truck. it would pull great at 40 mph, but then it seemed like it couldn't breathe the faster I got.

I just got this truck 4 months ago, and have not driven it much.

Thought #1, Check the air filter, dirty wouldn't hurt at lower speeds much but as power demand went up this could cause this.

Thought #2, How big is the radiator, 2 core, 3 core or 4? The 2 core is minimal for non-towing. The 3 core will usually get the job done, as long as coolant is good and radiator is clean inside and out. Never had an issue with my 4 core, regardless of temp and/or load.

Air filter is new, and recently I did a tune-up cap, rotor, plugs, wires, oil change, and fuel filter. Today i am going to change to the "heat buster" 4 row brass/copper killer radiator and am going to install a new fan clutch while I there, so I will update later.

fixed it

there was a wire in the spout connector, and it was not letting the timing advance (I did not pay any attention to the wire, I thought it was for the remote power locks)
