2000 Expedition with 5.4 and 4x4, stock I got about 12-14 average, but since a true flow intake any hypertech tuner I am probally getting 14-16 with good driving, mostly city driving for me.
That is about what we get as well. Anywhere from 10-14 in town depending on the driver and I get 15-16 on the highway doing 75. Wind has a big effect on these trucks as well.
'99 w/ 5.4, 168K on clock.
I seem to be in the 15-16 range in my average daily driving routine.
Maybe 50% hiway, 50% rural with some 4X4 beaching in there too.
Nice to see I'm right in the middle with others.
Traded in my Cherokee for this (20 mpg avg.) and love it.
Just like my Cherokee,,, on steroids!
98 xlt w/373 and 4x4.I cut off the main cats and used a flowmaster hoping for better sound and mileage,i think it make it worse.I do alot of car hauling with mine and it gets 10-12 mpg at 70+mph and the same around town empty. The gas tank hold so much fuel i believe it makes a small difference(the truck sags to the left when full!)
All in all the is my favorite truck ive ever had,you def want the 4x4,these things are pretty much a f200 because its got a boxed frame f250 rear and high tow ratings. But still has the nice car like ride and comforts.
i got 160k on mine and the only thing going bad is the lower control arms are rusty and the exhaust header leaks when cold-it seals up when warm.
I towed a 34' 1984 whenibago out of the mud with mine,it has all season tires,THATS IT!I WOULD HAVE NEVER BELIEVED IT IF I WOULDNT HAVE DID IT,the rv was gigger than a scool bus,all that from a non pi 5.4.
look for rust on the underside of the doors, the rear ones seem to do it the worst.
Thanks again for all of the replies. Now I just need to convince my wife that we can afford the upgrade. With a minor improvement in MPG and a drop in insurance over the Bronco, I think it's a good move.
Have the 3rd and 4th doors to more easily drop in the carseat will help the discussion, too.
Well here we are 4 months later. I had given up on the idea of replacing the Bronco, but it's acting up again so I'm thinking about it again. A friend of mine runs owns a lot and did really well on this Bronco for me 12 years ago, so I'm thinking about having him find an Exped for me. I'll miss the Bronco, but with a little guy or girl coming, I guess it's not just about me anymore.
Anyone out there with a 2WD Expedition care to comment about mpgs? Like 99% of the population, I simply don't use the 4x4, so I figure why drag the extra weight around for something that will not get used.
Thanks!
As said before, sacrificing 4x4 capability in the name of MPG's is a little misguided.
I have an '04 Expy 4x2 witht he 4.6L and 3.73 LS axle and i get 20 MPG on the hwy all the time and 13-14 in town. Your not going to find a full sized conventional SUV getting any better than that.
I'd say that your in pre-birth panic mode right now. Eat a half gallon of ice cream, watch a lifetime movie for woman and give it some thought.
The Bronco will meet your needs so long as it's dependable.

I see you are in AZ. I wouldn't worry about 4x4 then. Even up here in Minnesota 4x2 is fine depending on what you use it for. My work truck is a 4x2 1/2 ton Dodge and with a good set of tires on it and weight in the bed I get around better than the people with 4x4 trucks.
Did a 400-mile road trip yesterday in the Expedition and actually got 21mpg. About 95% was cruising on the highway @ about 77-78mph (according to GPS) with three people on board.
tseekins: ok, I'll eat the gallon of ice cream, but no way jose on the Lifetime movie. That's pushing it too far! I'd love to keep the Bronco, but it's just not as reliable as it used to be.
MrCMK: you are correct, I really don't need the 4x4 here in AZ.
Sometimes a vehicle can see a slight improvement in mileage with the extra running gear of the x4, but with as little as I drive and with what everyone is posting, I guess it really won't matter. I suppose I'll see what I can afford and go from there. Either way, the Expy has to be quieter than the Bronco. I'm looking forward to that.

I agree with you on the movie! Have you considered a supercrew F-150? Fantastic truck!

I had an '03 F150SC and I miss it, but I'd rather go with the SUV. It'll be better suited for hauling us, the baby, and visiting family over the next few years.
But, knowing me, I probably will change my mind and get another SC.

When I was looking, a used SC was at least twice the money as a similar years Expy. This was on the first gen trucks though, not sure if it translates to the newer version. Besides, if the snowmobile doesnt fit in the bed, there is no point having it
bought our 2004 Expy XLT 2WD 5.4L brand new and have put on 110,000 miles. bought it because of the kids (we have 9 yr old twin boy/girl and a 15 yr old son), tons of sports/activities, hauling our kids and teammates/friends/equipment and LOVE the fold-down 3rd row and all the options with fold-down mid row and 3rd row. We avg about 15.5 mpg hwy/city combined. Great truck for what we needed and we'd do it all over again.
