My wife & I are expecting our first child. I love my Bronco, but lugging a carseat into that thing doesn't look like it'll be the easiest task. So, I'm toying with the idea of moving up to an Expedition, Excursion, or 250/350CC. If I got the Xcur/250/350, I'd look for a diesel to (hopefully) improve my mileage.
So, what kind of mileage can one expect from the 5.4? If I went with the Exped, it'd be 2004-newer, and probably a 4x4.
I know it's not what you really asked, but here goes for your comparison. Had a 1995 F250 Diesel 7.3, had a 2003 Explorer with a 4.0 and now a 2001 Expedition with a 4.6, all 4X4 and the Expedition with 3.55 gears. On a good day of 60MPH flat land driving, mabye 17.5MPG. Any city traffic, lot of lights etc and you are at 15/16. Just too big a vehicle for much better given it's a 4X4.
1995 Diesel under same conditions w/4.10 gears, got 20 a few times
2003 Explorer w/3.55 gears, could get 20/21 but again city driving/lights killed MPG
We have an 06 Expedition EB 5.4 4x4.
For real......On a long trip, 16 to 19, depending on load and speed.
In town, 12 to 14, depending on who is driving.
YMMV literally.
98 exp 4x4 5.4L 3.55 rear end gets about 13 all the time small town and country driving. Maybe 14 on interstate for long trip but usually 13 mpg at 75 mph.
Well here we are 4 months later. I had given up on the idea of replacing the Bronco, but it's acting up again so I'm thinking about it again. A friend of mine runs owns a lot and did really well on this Bronco for me 12 years ago, so I'm thinking about having him find an Exped for me. I'll miss the Bronco, but with a little guy or girl coming, I guess it's not just about me anymore.
Anyone out there with a 2WD Expedition care to comment about mpgs? Like 99% of the population, I simply don't use the 4x4, so I figure why drag the extra weight around for something that will not get used.
My 99 [4wd 5.4 lifted 5.4] low-mid 11,s in town. No more than 16 on hwy. We also have an 04[4wd 5.4] mid 11,s 12 tops in town and mid 16,s hwy. Going to a 2wd wont make much if any difference imo. I take the front drive shaft out of my 99 in the spring and summer[awd] and it does not change, at least in town. We take our 04 on trips
Just a little reality check for you here Big suv's do not get good gas milage period. Big trucks generally get even worse gas milage. Going from a 4wd to a 2wd Expy, especially in a newer version, isnt going to gain you anything mpg wise. It is still a big heavy box with a V8. Getting 17-18 on the highway is as good as it gets. Don't expect a deisel to do any better either. The 7.3 is an excellent engine but it is going to give you the same milage numbers as quoted here for an Expy. I wouldn't touch the 6.0 diesel with a 20 foot pole. That engine is so troublesome it almost bankrupted Ford with recalls and buybacks.
What has worked for me...The smaller Jeep Grand Cherokee can get 20mpg, as long as you dont go for the HEMI powered version. My 2003 Dodge quad cab short box with a Cummins and automatic used to do 22-23 highway and 15-16 in town. Dont go newer and get the "600" version, find a 305/555, lots of power, amazing milage.
Realistically though, 13/17mpg is pretty good for a truck the size of the Expy.
Aside from the Bronco, I've owned 5 full sized Ford pickups, so I'm well aware of reality. My '03 F150 SuperCrew was able to get 15.5 around town, so I suppose if I drive an Expy calmly enough, I can get the same.
Good to know the Dodge got that kind of mpg. I might have to consider it, too.
2002 5.4 xlt 2wd auto expy. 13-15 city. 17-19 hwy. k&m drop in filter and engine treatment i added bumped the mpg up 2mpg to these numbers.
good luck with the new addition.
2000 Expedition with 5.4 and 4x4, stock I got about 12-14 average, but since a true flow intake any hypertech tuner I am probally getting 14-16 with good driving, mostly city driving for me.
