I know this has been asked a million times, but I'll ask my ? anyway. I'm new here by the way.
On my 2000 7.3, I know which relay is the GPR, but what is the other relay in front of it. I'm having problems with cold starts, so I used a test light on the GPR. I put the light on the side with the power coming in, and got a light, but when I put the light on the other post with the key in the GPR cycle, I had no light. I also did this on the other relay with the same results. Do these relays work in a sequence, or does the other relay have nothing to do with the GPR?
One more ?, where is the best place to buy a replacement GPR, and not pay an arm and a leg. Aren't these more less the same as a starter solenoid? I have various parts stores around, NAPA, O'reilly, Auto Zone, and maybe a couple others.
Welcome Troy. Sounds like you tested correctly. You can jumper across the 2 posts @ 30 sec.to confirm bad relay. Truck should start better.
NAPA sell a 109 and 110 relay. A think a big difference in price. I believe 109 mounts 90 degrees different orinetation, but both work the same. Also might try local IH dealer.
The front relay is the air intake heater, most believe unnecessary and remove for boost sensor location. Nothing to do with GPR.
If you want dirt cheap. Use the AIH relay as the GPR. Just do some wire swapping and taping.Don't need the AIH anyways. (free fix)
If you want just cheap. gp109 from napa $18 from 10% less with aaa if i remember. (caution, both mine burned out in less than two years).
If you want to get one that will last forever get the stancor. Well worth the money and built tough. http://www.guzzle7pt3.com/s_gpr.php http://www.mouser.com/search/refine....tt=802-586-902
The relay for the air intake heater, when should I be getting power to the other terminal, just at certain times?
The AIH relay will only operate during cold weather. At what temp it comes on and for how long I do not know. The same is true for the GPR. If it's not cold enough where you are the GPR may not operate simply by turning on the key. You should really check it by grounding the PCM control lead. Or check the PCM control lead for ground. If the geound is there the relay should operate.
As for testing the GPR, if I try and test it with the key in the GPR warming cycle, without the truck ever being started for the day, wouldn't the relay be operating then.
Sorry for all of the questions, I'm just trying to eliminate the cheap fixes first, before going into glow plugs. I wouldn't think that with 98,000mi. I would have glow plugs bad, but I could be wrong.

Thanks, Troy
GPR operation depends on the temp not how long between starts. Test it properly to make sure it is good or bad.
I had a glow plug go bad by 98K, but just one. The more often and the longer the GPs are on will determine how long they last. The colder the climate and more frequent use will shorten their life.
