I am getting ready to have a dual exhaust system installed on my 1985 Explorer with 302, my question is should I have my catalytic convertor removed or not, what impact will it have as to the sound produced, with or without? I don't want a loud exhaust but on the other hand i do want some sound.
I just removed my cat. And it is very loud. I suggest you dont take it off unless you want some sound!
I suggest you either remove your muffler or find a performance muffler to put on.
For a louder sound, ive like glass packs. There are many to listen to, i suggest you get on youtube and listen to several videos of different mufflers too see what you like!
Well, here in rural Oklahoma, the muffler shops don't give a rats a$$ about legal as long as you're money is green, that being said, what would be a good brand to go with cost wise?
You can buy the universal type cats at the local parts stores for around $60-70 dollars. You might want to look at the dual in-out cats if you are going to run duals all the way from the engine. Space is a problem running duals on these trucks, since the gas tank is in the way on the driver's side, and they both have to run down the passenger side.
Theres a 93 F 150 on youtube that has the best sounding exhaust i have heard on a truck. Its sweet an mean sounding. Has a 302 also. He has headers an as i understand it no cats. Just type 93 F 150 on youtube search an you should come up with it. Good Luck an Im with you let that 302 talk. He revs her pretty good at the first off the video and at the end.Shes cackles an pops.

Well it depends on what your wanting done... If your wanting to not have it too loud than id suggest you keep your cat. As for muffler brands, look up on youtube, Cherry Bomb, Flowmaster, or magnaflows. Those are some of my favorite sounding mufflers.
No cats, headers and duals, with thrush mufflers its still kinda loud on my 93 f250, but dosent sound nearly as good as cherrybomb glasspacks with no cats on my 78
I have listened to tons of them on line & some of the best sounding was with cat & dual straight pipes. I don't know yet, I will keep waiting for more input from you guys cuz you've been there. What about the cat & dual straight pipes, anyone done it?
I have a 83 f250 with a 351w, I didn't want it to loud, but somewhat of a rumble, so I went with headman longtubes, true duals from the engine back, using cats, flowmaster super 40s,with 3inch pipes. it is pretty quite, and starts to rumble fairly loud around 4000rpms. only thing i wish i had done different would have been to use stainless steel pipes. hope this helps you out a little bit.
OK, today I checked with a local muffler shop & he said, cat back duals with Cherry Bombs, back to under the bumper, with chrome tips for $175. Well what do you think of the price? Sounded pretty good to me, & 1 year warranty also
