I have been down the 400 m road. Trust me when I say dont waste your time and money. Put a 351 or 460 in it.
I disagree entirely, the 400 has the longest stroke of any Ford engine built ever,
and can make boatloads-o-torque. If you do your homework and perhaps get the
help of a local, knowledgeable machinist/engine builder (ideally, one that builds
performance-oriented Fords for a living) then you can make a GREAT truck
engine.
hydmech - Dunno anything about windage trays in these things or why you'd
want one; I probably wouldn't try to make a 400 be a high-rpm screamer. You
might ask in the 335 forum, rhough.
Didn't want to start an internet argument there, haha! I guess the 400 vs 460 argument will always be going on. In my case, I already had the engine and the parts so....why not!
I guess you are right about high rpms...I probably won't be gaining anything from a windage tray with an engine that don't even spin that high. I'm just trying to think of things to do while the engine is on the stand and not in the truck.
