Hey all. I've got an '89 F250 4x4 with the 460. Finally figured out my loss of power problem, the cat converter fell apart and plugged my exhaust system.
I've ordered a new cat and exhaust, still being shipped at this point.
I'm in the process of removing the old exhaust system... pipes, muffler, etc. I'm down the Cat and have to run to the store to get a stinkin' 18mm deep throat socket, sigh.
Anyway, I've got these two smaller diameter pipes attached to the top of the Cat. From searching here, it appears they are referred to as "EGR/thermactor tubes". Since I have yet to remove the main bolts for the Cat, I am being proactive in posting this question since it appears I am going to have trouble getting those pipes detached.
I did manage to bust the bolts on the clamps and get them removed (really bad rust). But those pipes feel pretty darn snug to the Cat.
Do you guys have suggestions on getting the pipes separated from the Cat? ... torch it a little? I've already sprayed some liquid wrench on them, but I'm figuring they were pinched and are gonna be a real b!itch.
The new Cat should have new bungs for the EGR/thermactor tubes
Nothing beats a little heat. Do you have emission tests? If not you could just do away with the smog pump system.
we don't have emission tests where I live now, but as soon as the population bumps up a little more, we will.... we are right on the edge of losing that freedom and burning our yard debris.
I contemplated taking all the smog junk off, but figured I'd just play it straight... plus I've already dropped the dime on the new parts.
