I'm having a problem with the truck in my sig. While getting gas about two weeks ago, I shut my truck off and put it on the accessory mode so my g/f could listen to the radio. Now probably for the first time since I bought the truck two years ago, I didn't fill the tank entirely. I got a half tank. When I started the truck back up, it read normally. When I got home and went for a drive later that night it was stuck on full. And that's how its been since that day. Stuck on full.
So my main question is how many other people have had this problem? What causes it and what's the solution?
Might be a stuck float or a bad sending unit, around here they had a batch of gas that had a high sulfer content and it damaged a lot of sending units hundreds of them, but shell did pay for the repairs.
My 04 would do that but correct itself if I turned off the truck and restart. finnaly got tired of the issue and took it to the stealer, bad sending unit.
I figure its not a stuck float cuz I only filled halfway and read correctly at first. Then later jumped to full. So I figured a short in the unit or in the cluster. But sounds like sending unit's bad. How much of a job is it to do this myself with a little less than a quarter tank?
I haven't had that exact problem, but I've read about some pretty wierd behaviour whenever the truck is turned on while fueling up.
What happened on mine was I turned on the key while fueling up to check the fuel level. Once I finished and drove away, it kind of stuck at around 1/2 full and it VERY slowly worked its way up to reading full as it should have. Probably over the course of 30 miles or so until it read properly.
Seems like turning the key on while fueling up confuses it.
Well I've noticed a few things when comparing Chevy and Ford gas gauges. Chevy's react to sudden changes in the tank quickly. So much so that our box truck at work with an eighth tank and a brake slam will bring on the low fuel light. Then when everything settles it goes back up. I think Ford does theirs different so the movements in the needle don't freak people out. Which is why I also think Ford started using idiot gauges instead of real ones.

confirmed...
i;ve had the same issue... learned not to turn on the key while refeuling..
I just experienced the same problem. left the key on the back position to listen to the radio during the fuel up and when the truck was turned on, the fuel gauge did not move from the quarter mark. drove home 5 miles and moved up to half a tank. Turning off and on the truck did not move the gauge to the full position as should have gone.
