front fuel tank problem

My son just purchased a 96 F-150 with only 64k on it original owner. When we took it for a test drive I tried both front and rear tanks and it ran fine on both. Two weeks later he filled the front tank and started driving down the road and it died. Switched to rear tank and it started up and ran fine. With key on and selector in rear position you can hear the fuel pump, with key on and selector in front position no sound. Switched the horn and fuel relays still no fix. Took fuel selector out of dash disassembled and contacts are good. So at this point I believe the pump in the tank is bad. Or is there something else to check? Since the tank is full I plan on lifting the bed, but I have read that you should clean the inside of the tank before installing the new pump. How important is it? Thanks for all advice.

Yes it sounds like the pump in the front FDM in the front tank is bad.
As far as cleaning the tank you need to look in it when you take the FDM out and if it clean or it has rusty junk loose in the tank.

Yeah, probably the pump. If it won't run with 12v directly applied, then it's shot. New ones aren't bad though, around $100

My front tank had a bad gauge sender and would fill from the rear tank. I finally replaced the front fuel delivery module yesterday.
