my dad's truck, 97 7.3, had another issue today, died on the side of the road from what sounded like a lack of fuel...my dad said it was sputtering and sounded like it was low on fuel so he switched over the tanks even though it still had enough fuel left... a couple minutes later he pulled over cause it got worse and he popped the hood, the fuel pump was bouncing up and down A LOT and he said a bolt was missing that should've been holding it down... is there a shaft or gear may have snapped? we checked the housing and it had enough fuel, but when we released the bleeder no fuel came out, as if there was no pressure... is this a common problem? are there any other things that could've caused this?
thanks a bunch guys, you're the first place i come to for troubleshooting
Our fuel pumps are activated by a small "Push rod" riding on a cam lobe. With the pump loose like you describe, pressure would not be generated and therefore you would have no fuel pressure at the schrader valve..
The pump bolts should be in the valley as there is no place for them to go. I have never heard of this situation happening as you describe it.
The pump came loose and quit working. If it bounced up and down the rod is still in there. Just bolt it back down and you should be fine. Unless there was other damage caused by this.
thanks guys i won't be near the truck tonight but i'll let my dad know and see if that works, but i'll be lookin it over tomorrow if he doesn't tonight
he got the truck working last night, apparently one bolt vibrated loose (must not have been put in tight enough by the previous owner) and another bolt got shaken so much it broke, he replaced both bolts and its all good now, he drove it all day with 0 issues!! thanks guys
