Hello all I joined this site due to a problem and also a good source of info and well rounded people to this beast of a truck.......
My Dad bought a 94 F-350 Centurion edition dually W/ extended cab 7.3 Turbo Auto trans,
It has been a really great truck for the past Year and a half the glow plugs where replaced last year along with the "TPS" being adjusted to help with the shift pattern problem it was having.
The truck has about 160xxx miles on it and is babied beyond belief...(like the brother I never had) LOL!!!
Here is where we are to date: Yesterday my dad was on the freeway doing about 65 and the truck went dead (as if you turned the key off) well he knew he was low in Diesel but not that low so he called me to bring him fuel and a wrench to bleed the injectors......Well on my way there he calls and says...Hey the truck started again and he was headed down the road I told Him Ill meet him anyway......Well he goes about 2.5 miles to the station and there is no Diesel pump there so he proceeds to get back on freeway and head to next exit. The truck dies I bring fuel we put it in and he gives a few rounds on the starter and the truck fires back up and goes on the the station. Well after about 30 more minutes of driving and idleing he stated he noticed that the truck had an unusual noise coming from under the hood (louder than the normal 7.3) so he gets in it and drives very carefully and slowly to the house about 2 miles out from the house he said he started to get smoke from the tail pipe, along with this noise.
So I come over and sure enough is a louder tapping/ rattle under the hood and a faint smoke from the rear until you give it some pedal and then BAM and big puff of smoke.....OUR problem is WTH is all this about and we cant agree if its oil burning/ or unburnt diesel..... Any help would be great on this matter we are both mech. inclined but diesel is all new to us and I cant get any sleep while his baby is down........HELP!!!! Thanks in advance.
Sorry so long I wanna be as descriptive as possible
Also for as far as WE can tell the truck is all original. Every 3500 miles the oil and filters are changed and like I said its babied to death never been used to do any work its more like a Car to him.....
And if possible Tomorrow I will make a video and show the problems as well.
start it up and check if one of the injectors is getting hotter than the rest, if so crack the fuel line with the engine running the engine should start missing, if it has no change you have bad injector, swap this injector to a different hole, see if that one stops firing, then disassemble the injector and try to clean it. if the smoke smells like diesel its a stuck injector, maybe good luck need injectors (8) can be had for $300.oo
sounds like the timing advance solenoid activated while warm or bad injector.hard to tell on the description.likely a bad injector since she's puffing smoke, but a stuck injector is pretty bad,not just increase in rattle.more like a knocking.
you can tell if she's burning oil or if it's unburnt fuel out the exhaust easy enough.
oil being burnt is blue smoke and has that distinct smell of burning oil.
unburnt fuel sounds like whats going on,and the exhaust will smell really rich and the smoke clear/white.
at 165k miles,it's overdue for a complete tuneup if it's never had one anyway.
reman ip,set of fresh injectors,and the timing set between 6BTDC - 10BTDC (8 +/- 2 degrees.)
Ok thanks guys a few things to check into now what I did find is this..... the main feed line to the IP is leaking along with 3-4 injectors not sure if its O-rings or return lines it has great throttle response and still smokes video in the A.M. thanks again for all you guys help and advice.
Ok so after talking with a few guys and had someone come look at the truck the injectors where crap!!! So I bought a brand new set of Delphi injectors and it seemed to run better but at the same time run worse a guy came by and found 2 injectors stuck open....(could feel compression where the line connected) took them back out and had cleaned Free from the place we got them from and reinstalled today it runs much better.....I think the problem is fixed on that note.
BUT!!!! here is the new problem while running it today to see if it would clear up smoking we noticed that right at the DP and turbo where the V-band connects there seems to be oil coming out from there about 4-6 drops a minute and it used a half quart of oil in a 20 minute period what could be the cause of this issue.....Thanks Dave
