Heres what happened.. we were doing the BB shim mod last night, my buddy said he did it on his 7.3 a few months after buying it (bought new in 01), I figured what the heck I'll give it a try. Took the return line off, and the O-ring was messed up and no O-ring in sight, so we stuck the BB behind the spring and put it all back together, started up fine, rev'd it a few times sounded good and then shut the motor down.
We stood around shooting the **** for about 20 minutes before i decided to go home, again truck started fine but when i took off down the road it had no ***, also an odd "ticking" sound from the hood, further down the road it would no longer accelerate and eventually would not idle and died.
Wouldnt start...
Got pulled back to my buddies house, took the BB out and was a VERY hard start, sounded terrible and the same "ticking" noise was under the hood.
Still couldn't figure it out, took the fuel bowl lid off bumped the motor over and they said "YUP thats your fuel pump, should be spraying fuel" put the lid on and climbed under and turned the truck to "ON" and my buddy said he could not here the pump running (under the cab on the frame rail).
OK my questions...
Since the o-ring was bad would we be sucking/ losing air at the return line which is causing all the problems?
Is there any other test I can preform to determine if it really is the fuel pump?
And if it really is the fuel pump what are my other options? Eventually I'd like to do a whole fuel system upgrade for more HP
Any help would be great, I'm a poor firefighter about to go back to school, so money is TIGHT
How much fuel is on your tank? Take the line off the front of the fuel pump and put a hose on it and put it in a container and turn the key on and see how much fuel comes out if any. Pump should run for mabe 30 seconds when the key is turned on.

Fuel tank of fuel I'll give that a try here in a little bit, going to have the truck towed to my house here in a little bit, just want to get a game plan.
So it should only spray fuel for 30 seconds? and if it doesn't do anything then its bad pump correct?
If it doesn't pump fuel then try metering the wires there should be 12v between the two wires when the key is turned on for about 30 seconds. If no voltage it may be a fuse. Do you get a wait to start light when you turn the key foreward?
The fuel bowl heater is a common problem that will make the truck die and sometimes blow the fuse for the fuel pump which also stops the wait to start light from turning on.
