No overdrive

What a great resource this board is. I used it before I bought my truck, and now that I've bought it, I been finding lots of help doing the repairs.

I've got a 2002 f450, v10, 4r100 w/pto, its a dumptruck. Its got 72k on it.

It runs great but does not shift from 3-4 ever. I used to think it did but it was just the TC locking. I have 4:88's so the motors turning about 3k at 55mph, which is what got me checking things out, that and the mpg.

It doesn't throw a code if I don't push the od button, but If I switch it on and off a few times and start and stop a few times I get PO783 (no 3-4 shift) not very helpful since I already know that.

With OD on, once I get going around 40mph and let off I coast until I slow enough, then engine braking in 2nd and 1st. With OD off I have engine braking 3-2-1.

I changed all the fluids when I bought the truck, and the trans fluid was a little brownish, didn't smell bad, but I don't think the previous owner ever changed it.

I read 2002 has problems with the solenoid body so I replaced it when I changed the fluid. There was a bit of sludge on the pan magnet , but no noticable metal shaving.

I guess that leaves bad OD clutch, or 3-4 valve in valve body. Since I tow my equipment a lot of times and I never go more then 10 miles or so to jobsites, if I turn off OD, will I hurt anything in the trans if I keep driving and towing?

Turned out to be loose feed bolt, the one that holds the overdrive assembly to the case.
It didn't have any locktite on it, but the other 2 that go to the center support did, and they were tight.

I'm having the same problem! Where is this located? Can it be fixed without removing the trans from the truck? Pictures?

thanks

The feed bolts can be accessed without pulling the transmission, but you need to remove everything inside the pan. You remove the pan, filter, solenoid pack, accumulator, lower valve body, and the plate. When you remove the plate, check ***** will fall out.

There are other things that can cause overdrive failure. In my case, I narrowed it down to what I thought was failure of the bonded overdrive piston. I was almost right, but it was the feed bolt the holds the intermediate/overdrive piston assembly to the case. It was loose so the loss of pressure led to failure. It dosen't take long to fry the overdrive clutches when this happens.

I decided to rebuild the trans myself, and its a good thing because I had burned overdrive clutches. I did most of the upgrades, alto clutches, steel 6 pinions planet, triple disk billet convertor, etc. I ended up buying some tools kits off ebay, rotunda t89t-7000, and t99t-1000 I think they are. they have the tools that are harder to make to do the rebuild.

I would start off getting an ATSG manual if you decide to fix it yourself.

here a good link that helped me.
