I only have 2500 miles on my '08 CC 6.4, but I've been really impressed with how well it does on fuel. Many here complain about lousy fuel economy, and knowing this before I bought it, I expected the same.
What I've gotten is two tanks in the 15's, one tank in the 12's, and over a 600 mile highway trip as high as 16.5! I have to say I'm impressed that a modern emissions-controlled 8,000 lb truck does this well!
Are you doing the calculation or are you using the message center AVG MPG reading? I hate to ask the question, sorry.
Also, get the engine hours off of your truck and divide them by miles driven. This will give us the average speed per hour that your truck has been driven. Just curious what your driving habits are like. I'll do the same and we can compare.
The general frustration with MPG comes from the guys who had the previous generation diesels that gave high teens per gallon.
I don't think any of us that came out of big gassers have the same frustration, we're used to seeing 12 or less.
My wife's Expedition 5.4 get 16-18 most of the time. I was very surprised to see those numbers!

Reason: add 5.4 comment
Yeah, I know, the first question in my mind when someone is discussing MPGs is where they get their information.
All of these numbers are hand calculated, as the lie-o-meter may be close, but it is certainly not accurate. I find my lie-o-meter to be 1-2 MPGs off most of the time, so far.
I'm not at home, but I'll have my wife pull the hours and miles off the truck when she gets the chance. May be a bit off, as the truck only has 2500 miles on it, and the engine was replaced with 200 on the clock...
your numbers are in the ball park with mine. coming from a 06 with the 5.4 in it. I am very happy!
I was in the same boat. I came from a 01 Supercrew with a 5.4 motor. Best i could get was 16 and that was with the wimpy factory tires. Off the lot my F250 was getting 17 by the lie-O-meter in perfect conditions but i was actually getting between 16 and 16.5 hand calculated. I was very happy cause compared to my old truck I now have a monster and it gets better mileage. As of today I have installed the Spartan off road system and so far the mileage looks to be better. How much i don't know because I'm waiting to hand calculate the numbers. Now, if I was only allowed to take my truck on pavement.

so what would be a high average speed? I think mine is around 44 (21,000 mi/~480hrs).
My average speed is 39.6 MPH. 95,136 on the odo, 2400 odd hours on the truck. I don't know what is good or better or whatever, I just think it's a cool statistic and the figure can be used when shopping for a used truck. Low mileage, lots of hours, slow average speed = lots of idling.
The 44 MPH figure is pretty good. I drive a LOT, mostly interstate so your number just shows that your truck is covering more ground than mine does, which is saying something in my book.
Seems like everyone is getting different mpg's with these trucks. When I drove mine off the lot the lie-o-meter said 18.9 mpg's, I was so happy I almost pi$$ed myself! A couple weeks later it was down to 11.5! Give it some time Crazy, don't get too excited yet. I think the people getting 16 to 17 stock are in the extreme minority, most of the complaints are from people like me who went from a diesel getting 17 to 20, to a pitiful 11 mpg's. I can agree with ya though, if you had 5.4 or a v-10, you're on top of the world in a diesel!
Never did get the full story there. I bought the truck when it had 240 miles on it, as a leftover '08 I purchased in April of this year.
I bought it, drove it home, and didn't think too much about why or how it had been on the lot for 13 months. Then, out of curiosity I requested an OASIS report here on FTE and was very surprised at what I found:

I went back to the dealer, aggravated at not being told this earlier, and the best answer they could come up with was that it developed a problem on the way there from another dealer, on a dealer trade. An they replaced the engine. And didn't tell me about it.
But, it's been running great ever since I got it, with no complaints so far...
on edit: benmoderow, I never have trusted the lie-o-meter in any vehicle I've driven...they're always at least a bit off. The MPGs I mentioned earlier were all hand calculated.
Another factor in hand calc'ing MPG is the amount of fuel you put in on a fill up. NJ is not a self serve state, I try to fill it but not always. After the pump automatically shuts off, i've been able to get another 4gals into the tank. Diesel foams/bubbles up which causes the pump to shut off. If you let the bubbles subside and fill slowly, you can get much more in the tank.
So, if you don't fill the tank to the same point each time you fill up, then your hand calc'd mpg's will be off. I just filled up (to the brimm) last night and took ~27 gals and had 375 miles on the the trip odo which is about 13.9mpgs. If took 2 more gals than my last fill up my hand calc'd mpgs would be off by 1mpg. Not terribly significant but I feel alot better with my mpgs having a 15 handle rather than 13....
At some point in the miles driven, the amount of fuel not put in on fillups will begin to average out--if you are always 1-2-3 gallons short, it shows higher mileage, but each subsequent fill will have FEWER miles driven before having to fill again. It really only affects a single tank fill/mpg calc, then it works itself out.
