I am wondering what is the best way to degrease my 300 without causing any damage to wires etc. The previous owner let the valve cover gasket leak for a very long time, and it made a big mess!
I bought some spray on de-greaser for engines. I am a little hesitant to get the engine compartment all wet. I heard some people pressure wash? I don't know...
Hey man, your best bet is multiple washings over time. Buy any kind of de-greaser you want, such as Simple Green, go get the engine warm, and spray everything!
Head to your local car wash, leave the truck running, and spray down everything.
As long as you stay clear of the distributor you will be completely fine.
The wiring is nothing to worry about as long as there are no exposed wires.
I washed mine about 20 time before my rebuild because I hate grease when I'm wrenching so get to work!
Actually I would not spray water on a warm engine. Thats asking for problems. Make sure the engine is cool.
Why would you do it with a hot motor and while its running?
Simple Green does work well. I use it all the time. for the parts of the engine that are really dirty you can use some Gunk first. Some of the real nasty areas may require being Gunked a few times or a brush. Then simple green everything and hose it off.
Don't power wash it. You can use the car wash sprayer just don't try to blast the hell out of everything at a real close range.
I hose mine down a few times a year with out any problems.
I hate working on dirty engines too or anything under the hood for that matter on a dirty engine bay.
If it is real bad, you might find that gunking it and brushing it in the driveway and rinsing with the hose first and then going to the car wash will get you better results.
To clarify my previous post, get you engine nice and hot and then spray it down with a de-greaser. Repeat several times in a week.
Wake up one morning, drive straight to the car wash and start spraying. I've sprayed off all my engines for the last couple years this way and have had no problems at all.
That way the engine is fairly cool still.
