My question concerns degreasing the engine. I don't know exactly where the oily residue is coming from, but I had my oil changed at the dealer. Afterwards I noticed that I had oily residue on several areas near the filter, and a wet spot on the hood liner. Also noticed that the fuel filter was not real tight, so I don't know if it could have leaked some. Anyway is it safe to use a degreaser and spray water to clean the engine? I don't know if there is anything that needs to be covered to safely do this, so I am asking FTE guys, is there anything I need to do or not do to be able to clean up this mess.
Don't use anything that is corrosive to aluminum such as simple green or greased lightning. You'll have electrical connection issues. I'd use electrical/brake cleaner on specific areas and make sure you're in a well ventilated area, front end UP would be preffered so what accumulates in the valley can run off the back of the motor. You might want to put a large piece of cardboard to catch the runoff as it will probably go down both sides of the bellhousing. That's what works for me. You won't get it all clean but you can get lots and lots of the gunk off.
In my detail shop we use a water based degresser, ya I know sounds funny (water based), I have used it serveral times on my truck and wifes car, never had any problems with it. Rightlook.com is where you can get what we use, an engine detail from us usually runs around $55.00 and will look better than new.
when i first picked up my truck that was one of the first things i did. i used the store brand engine brite i believe it is called. read your owners manual as far as what to cover. i think it says the batteries and something else.. just make sure you don't do this where you want grass to grow again LMAO!
