Had the alternator tested and they say at the moment it is still good but showing signs it is going out. Where can I get an affordable replacement that is also an upgrade for the charging amps?
I checked DB and they only show a 125 and 160 specifically for 2004. Now I did find a 220 for 05-06 model years. Won't the 220 fit an 04?? I also found another site has anyone tried these alternators? http://www.alternatorparts.com/Ford_...ke_Diesel.html

Thanks!
who checked it for you.sounds like you have been to one of the chain stores.I own a rebuild shop and have never used the term ( " showing signs of going out") In my experience An alternator is either good or bad...If your charge light or battery light is on of flickering then your alternator is bad.before you spend any major money take your truck to someone qualified and have it checked.
The chain stores generally have no or low trained personal who basically give you a best guess.I have ran across a few who actually know what they are doing but most do not ,and simply want to sell parts as they have been trained to do.
Also while we are on the subject, why does everyone want a bigger alternator.i have customers ask all the time ..can you get me a higher amp and I ask "what for" or " why do you need more" all alternators on vehciles now days will charge more than they vehicle will ever need.
Unless you have some extras added to your vehicle that have high amperage requirments,a "bigger" alternator is simply a waste of money.
Dont want to seem to rant but I hate to see people spend their hard earned money just because they were mislead by an inexperienced tech.

".... showing signs it is going out" ? What a crock!
WhiteFord, yours is some of the soundest advice I have seen on this subject.
Reps to you!
Would you be willing to share your criteria for a "quality" rebuild?
(we were talking about rebuilders and rebuilt alternators)
--------------
"If they're any good, you'll most likely end up with a much more reliable unit as a result. The key elements are:
"The best lubricant in the best-quality bearings.
A high-quality regulator/brush assembly (and there are some cheap-o's out there).
A well-balanced rotor with good commutator rings.
"Diodes, unless you've abused the alternator, don't normally fail, and can be re-used if they check OK.
"If the rebuilder pays attention to this stuff, you'll get a good one. Unfortunately, custom rebuilders are becoming like buggy-whip manufacturers.
"Most are high-volume shops that use cheap labor and cheap parts. It's why a LOT of the parts-house rebuilds have a considerably-lower MTBF."
------------------------
So......
What do YOU think makes for a "quality" rebuild? Would you add or subtract anything? Any additional comments?
I had the alternator checked out because people on here said that if the battery light is flickering it is a sign that it is going out. Well my light is flickering, the "chain store" hooked the truck up to some machine that ran a few tests on the battery and alternator that had shown some sort of graph as to how the alternator was charging. And I do want a higher amp alternator to run accessories in the future (air compressor, winch, lights, etc..).
So.. where can I get a durable, quality build alternator? DB electrical or these folks http://www.alternatorparts.com/Ford_...ke_Diesel.html ?? I'm going to call them both today and see what they say to get a feel for them.

I also bought an alternator from QS, fast service, i like the bigger diodes for my f-350, it has a snow plow on it. Let us know how you like yours!
I also agree with whiteford, I just replaced the alternator on our 2000 X (175'000 miles) with the stock one off of the f-350 (65'000 miles), the f-350's was replaced with one from Quik Start. The stock one on the 2000 X never gave us any trouble, it was just time to change it out. the one thing I did learn in all of this was to make sure your lead wire off of the alternator was keep tight all the times, on the X it showed signs of heat and the stud that the hot wire in the alternator connects to was a little lose. Hope this helps!
