97 Exp XLT --- I'm sure the multifunction switch is same for every year...
I have been noticing a trend lately that if I want my wiper fluid to work properly, I need to push the corner/rim of the round button in order for the fluid to even squirt out. And even then it doesn't always want to spray a full blast. Sometimes I'll get a couple of small spritzes or nothing at all. My best luck in getting it to work is when I push on the edge of the button with a little force and everything works as normal. I'm concerned with getting this fixed as I'll need my wiper fluid more and more as we head into the winter months.
My question is: Can I replace the end switch for the washer fluid since everything else works perfectly or do I need to replace the whole (expensive) multi-function switch?
I also had an issue where the fluid would only squirt sometimes. Like you, I thought it was the button on the end, but it wasn't. The next time they don't squirt, try putting on your turn signal and then try it again. If it squirts fine you will need to change the whole multifunction switch.

Thanks again for the reply. I'm to the point I need to put your number on speed dial for the amount of threads you answer for me! Anyhow, Ford dealership wanted $167.91 for the new unit while my local parts guy said his runs $77. Obviously one is genuine Motorcraft and the other is a generic brand. Quality wise is there any reason to stick with Motorcraft over an aftermarket replacement? A part of me wants to always use actual Ford parts, but if the cheaper one will do that will help the ol' college-empty wallet.
BTW, yes it sprays fluid just fine when the blinkers are on. I may just deal with the issue.
Just get used to cleaning the windshield when making left or right hand turns But the aftermarket switches really do not look to be made of a very high quality material. Maybe get a used one from an auto wrecker instead.

The first one lasted 12 years. If you only get 1/2 that out of the aftermarket one, it will still likely surpass the time you will be the owner of this vehicle. Correct?
That being said, get the aftermarket one and save the money.
there was a thread here a while back that went through how to clean all those contacts on that switch - can't find it right now, does someone remember it? I have it printed out at home, just have never done it (btw - I have the same issue, I also have the "speed blinker" intermittently too)
Thank you very much for the link. I'm not sure if I will be able to access the wiper fluid switch but it's worth a shot - and while I'm at it cleaning the contacts. I will consider this for the future when I have a full Saturday to kill. This is also a good excuse to buy new tools since I don't have anything smaller than a 7mm....
