best dino oil?
I don't know of any that can match synthetic for the extremes in temperature or long use. However if you aren't operating at the extremes then select a name brand SL rated Dino, and you should be ok. If you want peace of mind that you aren't sludging up, then change the Dino more frequently than you would a synthetic.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-17-03 AT 10:13 AM (EST)]Mike,
I still tend to think that most any oil would do good. BUT, here's why I continue to believe in the Shell product: I KNOW it is giving great protection , no signs of gunk or sludge and it is very cost effective. This is based on my PERSONAL experience and is not intended to imply other products would or would not perform comparably.
As I hang around here, it seems there's always some little question raised about virtually every major oil brand you can buy. Pennzoil, Quake State, Castrol, even Mobil 1, and others. But I have noticed that there is virtually no "questioning" a few (at least from what I have seen) and those are: Chevron, Mobil (dino), and Shell.
For some reason, I tend to think that those are - for the most part, some of the best oil values (quality and price) that can be bought.
So, since I've had the results I have had, and nobody has turned up any dirt on Shell, I'm gonna' stick with it.
I think now back to the time almost 3 years ago when I first bought the Shell oil. I rememeber standing in Advance Auto, looking at Formula Shell for 88 cents/qt, and thinking about all the race venues around the world and all the Shell signs I see and knowing how involved they are in lubricants, and thinking "this is bound to be a good oil."
I have been very happy with my decision (currently at 83,000 miles).
See you later,
Brian A

I used Quaker State 10w-30 in my 1990 Topaz with STP 4 cylinder engine oil additive.Changed the oil every 5000km,and the breather filter every 20,000 and used ford filters on everything.
When I first bought it it already had 20,000km on it.Never did a single thing too the motor or tranny (changed fluid every 50,000 km).Drove it hard, once putting 5500km in a 10 day span.
I had to plug it in when it got to -20c but it never failed to start when I did.One time it got to -48c. (At that temp -40 is -40 on deg. or cel. scale) and procedded to boost every other car in the parking lot! I believe I converted a couple guys that day
About a year and a half ago I gave it to my little sister and she loved it! but her boyfriend is a GM guy and "don't need no help from no-one especially from a ford!"He did a little work on it and somehow the tranny blew up a couple months later. He 's now walking to work in -20 -30 weather
How many kms? 239,438 when I parked it in her driveway and handed her the keys.

Gotta love (from all I've read) the Big-Boys Mobil, Chevron & Shell (not necessarily in that order, oh and Exxon - a.k.a. Exxon-Mobil) and Havoline for that matter (still not clear on them - they and Chevron are one now right? - but didn't Shell get a piece of that action - or was it QS/Pennzoil that they (Shell) bought? - Sorry Horsepuller - I believe you graciously explained this ALL to us (ME) once already -
I REALLY have long liked Valvoline - not heard any "bashing" of them anywhere either, Castrol GTX is a very close 2nd for me - QS & Pennz, well they take a lickin' `round these parts - but they've been "around" about as long as anybody - QS did have some serious probs, back in the `70's I believe - but I think, as has been mentioned by a number of "Guru's", CHANGED PROPER (TIMELY AND ACCORDING TO SERVICE RENDERED AND ANTICIPATED - INCLUDING AMBIENT TEMPS EXPECTED), and good filtering, well, if they're carrying SL/GF-3 ratings they are good minimum 3000 miles - probably 4000 under "normal" service.
Just my 1 cent -
