Well what a trip up to Oregon, blew a trailer tire, smoked like crazy, the EGT were any where from 1,200 to 1,500 and for the grand finally I dropped a freaken VALVE! Thats right I lost a valve after a big hill we started to hear a ticking noise that got louder and louder and we were loosing power going up hills till the point were pined we could only go 45 up hills then going down the road the truck said pull over and stop so we got off and pulled over came to a stop and it died and would not restart so we had to have a 6.o tow us the rest of the 120 miles and then after an hour the stupid thing started so we drove it to the RR tech day and the next day dropped it off the stealer ship and were here in Scio, Or until its fixed so WTF caused the valve to drop?
Thanks
Nick
I don't know. I have thrown all the weight I can at mine and never have seen EGT higher than 1350. I have tried to make it really hot, just never have been able to do it.
I'm not familiar enough with the 6.4 to know what might have caused it - but my best guess is that the higher EGT's were because the valve was already on it's way out. Sorry to hear about your luck man. Lemme know how everything goes.
Glad you made it there. Now how are you going to get your fifth wheel home????? Let me know how long it's going to take them to get it fixed, and what they say caused it!!!!

Ya for sure Mick I will be giving you a call when I know everything.
Uhh, it dropped a valve, then an hour later it started back up, and you were able to drive it back home and back to the dealer?
Well the noise started about 500 miles into our 550 mile trip but did not know what it was then it died and would not start for an hour and then it started right up with the noise and the delarship said it was a dropped valve but not sure it's 100%
Did the engine feel rough? If it didn't, I have even a harder time believing it really dropped a valve, let along the fact that it still started and ran.

Nope it felt fine and was just low on power and the sound was horrible.
Ian, just curious here why you think one inoperative valve would completely disable an engine...I mean, sure it would prevent one cylinder from building compression...but there would be 7 more that would still work...right?

In most casses when I've heard of a valve dropping - especially in a diesel, it usually ends smashing the piston to bits, or locking the piston tight and snapping a rod. If you lost a cylinder on a Diesel, you should be able to really tell there is a miss.
