I am sure you have seen this question before, but I own a 2000 Excursion and love it. Downside is that it is 9 years old all the springs creak and after 145,000 miles it is getting a little tired. So now I am thinking, do I go through the motor, pep it up and then supercharge it... adding all the upgrades elsewhere new tranny with a new lift kit and leather interior or do I kick it out of the family and find an 05 diesel Eddie Baur (even though i am not a fan of the way Ford did the two tone... it is kinda square). Either way, I figure $20,000 to do the upgrades vs $22,000 for and 05 diesel. I am torn because I have a custom stereo, 6" lift and other cool upgrades to make it nice, but I don't want to spend money on it if it won't be what I want. I love power, so I want something i could hook up any trailer and never look back. I dont' think I want to attempt a diesel coversion... the idea scares me... what do you think?
My take on it is if you have the money and you want, then go and get it and you won't regret it. Thinking about it in a few years and saying to self, I shoulda, or coulda just is not right if ya can.
For instance, I really wanted a boat this spring. When I started looking and found many more above my budget this year, I decided to wait for another year and get what I want and will be happy with for years to come, instead of just getting a boat and then not ever being happy.
DO it right the first time with no regrets.
. . . . . I love power, so I want something i could hook up any trailer and never look back. . . . . .
With your priorities, I think you are NUTS if you can afford a diesel & dont get one. My EX is a late model low mileage V-10. I am VERY happy with it. But without making MAJOR compromises in all-around reliability and economy, you can never make a gasser have the raw "grunt" pulling power of a diesel.
I would look for an 02 or 03 EX with the 7.3 powerstroke, the 6.0's are not all that good in the 05's. According to my brother in law, who is head diesel tech at Ford.
