I would swap solenoids with injector #3 and retest. If you get a P0267 it is a bad solenoid. If it comes back with another P0273 you have a wiring problem, most likely a short to ground on the #5 injector lead. Don't forget to clear codes before re-testing.
I'll be dam. I got a bad Reman IDM. I swapped mine with a friends 2002 7.3 and it started right up and ran perfect. I bought my IDM from Auto Computer Exchange - 5414 Stirling Road, in Davie, Florida. They are sending me another unit. However, that doesn't help me recover the $200 I wasted on replacing the pass side vc gasket and uvc wire harness, the $300 scanner I bought, all my time over that last two weeks it took to troubleshoot to get to this point, and a day of work missed. I woulnd't buy from them again.

It happens to the best of us.
At least you know what's wrong. You also learned a lot of valuable things along the way. The scanner will always be useful.
Thanks for letting us know what you eventually found.

Well you could have still wound up missing the work, waiting a longer time, and spending more money if you had just had the truck towed to a shop in the first place.
Now you've got a scanner and the understanding that things need to be diagnosed before throwing money at parts. Most mechanics have a scanner, but they tend to throw money at the problem based on what the scanner says instead of verifying things.
I think you saved money in the long run. Too bad there's not a way for us common folk to test an IDM before plugging it in.
I am having the same problem with my 2002. I tested the resistance at the valve cover gasket connector today and everything appeared to be fine. Now I am in a similar quandry... invest in a scanner that can run the Ford diagnostics or go ahead and take it to the shop. I suppose it is either the IDM or a bad injector, so should I risk just buying a new one?
What scanner did you find for $300? Cheapest solution I have found so far is the Autoenginuity for a laptop but that is at least $350 with the Ford extension package.
