E4OD

I am wondering if the behavior of the E4OD in my '91 F250 4x4 with 5.8L is typical of that transmission. When you first step on the gas from a dead stop, there is sort of a jolt before the truck starts moving. And even when it doesn't do this, the tranny doesn't seem to engage very well at low RPMs. In other words you have to rev the motor more than seems necessary to get moving. It also shifts unpredictably. Sometimes it shifts very smoothly (almost too smoothly) and other times it shifts almost harshly. From the description, does it sound like rebuild time? Anyway, thanks for listening to all my troubles.

It may not neccessarily be rebuild time... perhaps just a thorough service and the addition of a Transgo shift kit. My '90 F250 4x 460, same tranny, shifted very slow, long, sloppy and like yours, unpredictably. After the service and the shift kit, it feels better than new. The kit cost $60.00, shop installed for $80.00.
good luck

Is this an internal kit or an electronic plugin?

It's an internal kit... trans stays in during the installation. Pan comes off and several springs and such are replaced with different ones. Now I surely dont claim to know much about the insides of these auto trannies... thats why i had it installed by my favorite trannie guy!
But the difference was definetly positive!

We used to have these kits installed in the early '80's chevy novas we used for police cars... chirped out of 1st and 2nd...headsnapping chirps! But its not like that in the trucks... just a crisp, firm shift.

Thanks for your help rondog. I got to thinking about it and $80 for installation would be quite a ripoff if it wasn't an internal kit. Does this kit happen to improve off the line performance at all?

Well, we changed the fluid and put in an additive that has improved the shifting, but hasn't done a thing about the poor acceleration, etc. I just find it hard to believe that a 5.8L doesn't have the power to move this truck better than this. My parent's '86 Grand Marquis with EFI 5.0L and AOD would absolutely blow it away and that car has about 120k on it. My Dad's '85 F150 with recently rebuilt 351HO and C6 also accelerates better and gives a more responsive feel. Somebody please tell me the way my truck is behaving isn't normal. I also have a hard time believing my gas mileage is normal. 5-6 MPG if I'm lucky? (city driving) Could this also be a result of a nonefficient tranny? One more question. What does a normal rebuilt cost for an E4OD? Again, thanks for taking the time to read all of this.

I don't know the answers to too many of the questions you asked, but some of the symptoms your having are similar to mine. Do you have oversized tires and a stock rear end? That will hurt acceleration. As far as the gas mileage goes, I hear you. I don't know what happened, but my mileage went from about 10mpg to under 5 (both #s with the 35's). I have been informed MY tranny needs rebuilding.

As far as locally in VA, I haven't found a place that will touch a E4OD for under $1000.00 (most of these places won't do a bench rebuild either). There is a place in Phoenix, AZ called Phoenix Hard Parts the I just purchased a rebuilt E4OD for $750.00 through. The shipping is a fair deal, they have their own shipping company and it's supposed to cost about $145.00 round trip (the core is a $300.00 fee).

I would recommend calling around on the rebuild, but I wasn't able to find anything reasonable enough. Hope this helps.

I am no longer driving that truck...gas was absolutely killing me and I really didn't need a 3/4 ton. It has 3.55 gears with stock size tires. In my opinion, the 3/4 ton with a smallblock and automatic should have come factory with 4.10s. It started out as a buy/fix/sell project. My dad and I pooled our funds and bought the truck with a blown motor and were/are going to share the profit when/if we sold it. Was supposed to have a motor to go right in but it turned out that the guy had bought a 302! My dad was driving it to and from work for a couple of weeks then I drove it and was surprised at the difference in power. I guess the motor could just be getting broke in. I have come to the conclusion that the 5.8/auto/3.55 combo does not make for a very lively driving experience. And it's definitely not a truck you want to drive much in town with that type of gas mileage. Now my dad is trying to decide whether to sell the F250 or sell his '85 F150 and keep the '91. In the meantime I'm loving my new-to-me Ranger AND the gas mileage.

LAST EDITED ON 20-Dec-00 AT 09:35 PM (EST)[p] Try tightening the valve body to transmission bolts, ours somehow became loose and caused tranny to shift funny and shudder when going into overdrive. Just remove pan and retorque bolts to factory settings( a Chilton's or Haynes manual should have them). I would also check all vacuum lines to tranny, also see if torque converter is unlocking when you come to a stop. I hope this helps in any way.
