I want to put a mild shift kit in (C6) my truck, and I hear many stories! I have about 85k on the tranny. I was told that this was not a good idea for that many miles, I was also told that it would be fine because the more presure between the plates, the less slip between the plates, the longer my tranny would last? The tranny has no problems now, I just want a firmer shift. Can anyone help?
Thanks Guys!!!!

I generally install shift improver kits when I overhaul a c-6, but have installed them in non overhauls with good results. Just be sure to follow the instructions that come with the kit and NEVER wipe the inside of the trans. with any shop cloths. This will leave fuzz that you can't see but will find it's way to the valve body. Let me know if you have any questions.
I agree with OZ don't worry about the milage just as long it's in good shape(not burning tranny oil, slipping, won't go into gear at morning start-up & etc.). Just read instructions with kit and you'll be fine(opt for the street/strip version). A B&M kit is a good kit to use, I've used a TCI kit but with not as good of results as the B&M. Whatever you do DON'T use emery cloth or sand paper or any other abrasives on the valves inside the valve body, I learned this the hard way.
I hope this helps in any way.

Todd is right, B&M are better. I've had good luck with Fairbanks too. If you do need to polish any valves, use crocus cloth to polish then use the backside to buff to a shine. Don't over do it. If this is the first time that you have ever done this....well, you ain't gonna learn any younger.
Thanks for the info guys. This (IS) the first time doing this so I really don't want to mess this up. Knowing that the tranny costs about $1000 to have rebuilt! I'm pretty good with tools, I put headers on, Lift kit, basicly everything to this truck myself. What's really involved? Anything I should watch out for? Ballbearings falling out, springs popping when I drop the valve body ect..Thanks again......

LAST EDITED ON 22-Dec-00 AT 10:26 AM (EST)[p]There won't be any springs fly but there are 6 small check ***** between the valve body halves that will fall out. The kit should have a diagram of where these go. If the kit does not have a torque spec. let me know. It should have a bolt tightening sequence in the instructions. Tighten to 55 inch lbs. Keep in touch on your progress
Thats good. One more thing When I put the check ***** back in do they sell some kind of grease to hold the in so the valve body could be put back on without them moving? Also I owned another truck that had a shift kit I did'nt install and it shifted REALLY hard (I don't want that)Just something Firm without a slip at high rpm, do you recomend the RV/Towing kit? Or will the street and strip be ok? Thanks again...

Trans gel is used to hold parts like this, but you won't need that because the check ***** will be installed on the bench. The valve body is in 2 halves with a separator plate between. everything will be done on the bench so all you will have to do is put the valve body in.
I would set it up for street/strip. This will give you the firm shift you want without snapping your neck.
Thank you very much !!!! You kinda gave me a little more confidence now. Just curious,Is the R/V setting not that firm? I'll let you guys know how I made out. It might be a little while though. I live on Long Island we just got about an inch or so of snow, And I dont have a gararge "YET". I almost have the wife convinced! She'll give in sooner or later LOL.
Thanks Again
