I have an 85 1/2 F150 (4 wheel drive) with a fuel injected 302 and and AOD tranny. The tranny completely blew up last December. I brought it to the local tranny shop, and for $1000 he rebuilt it, one year warranty. With the rebuild came a rebuilt torque converter. I had a 90 F350 pick up, so I didn't drive the truck too much. Well, I sold the F350 and about a month later the F150 tranny let go. I took it back, and a week and a half later, I had an $85 bill for a new flywheel (they didn't notice that the original one had a tooth missing the first time.) I drove the truck 455 miles and it blew up again. It when back, and two weeks later I had a bill because "a brake line let go coming into the shop." (Of course they never call me to tell me that they are going to need money.) He told me that this time he changed the case because there was some wear in the old case. That all took place at the beginning of the spring. That didn't bother me because I have a Mustang GT that I drive during the summer. Well, last Friday I was cruising at 65 on one of our interstates and the tranny started slipping in fourth. (300-600 rpm increases) So as it got worse, I decided I would come home (30 miles) the back way on a road that I can't get into OD on. Well, the tranny then starts popping into neutral under any kind of load. Now when it is cold, it won't shift into 2nd, but once it warms up, it will shift all the way through fourth, but it still jumps into N under load.
So I went to the shop, and the guy look at me and said "oh no." Yup, oh no. So I agree with him that the tranny fluid isn't dirty or burnt. So he tells me that the torque converter is going. I wonder if this diagnosis is correct. Does any one have any thoughts? His proposal is to put in a torque converter from Ford and then go through the tranny to make sure none of the torque converter is in the tranny.
Any thoughts would be great. Just don't sound like my girlfriend - "Just go buy a new one..."
To be honest I'd find someone else to work on this truck. As far as wear marks on the case, that sounds like a line of BS if I've ever heard one.
