#1 i hear knocking like metal on metal when i decelerate or come to a stop. just clank clank clank. i figured it migh tbe driveshaft so i checked under checked uni joint. shook the hell out of drive shaft to see what was up. and cant find anything. the rear diff leaks a bit. bt i refilled it this weekend and checked it. its not a horrid leak to be low atm. plan on replacing soon. i am aware that the brake assembly on passenger side needs a bit of work, could these be possibilities? im just gonna let it set until i figure out what is going on.

#2 issue. is it jerks when in first. unless i give it a bit of gas ive taken my foot off pedal to see if its trying to die on me. but truck keeps coasting forward but lunges forward every second or so. new to trucks. bought it for DD and a project so any help is really nice.

1978 ford f250 custom btw. 400 ci motor 2wd.

first gear is a granny gear which means any small increase in rpm due to the natural running of the engine will cause it to lunge. Thats why most people take of in 2nd ;-) these trannys are basically a 3 speed with a granny gear. Regarding your first issue I can't really understand what you are trying to say...

Could it be your exhaust hitting something?

I rebuilt the carb on my truck, and it starts from 2nd very smoothly. Used to jump real bad and hesitate under load.

I'm going out on a limb here, but I had a banging sound like you described but it went away when I hit the brakes. The spring that holds the caliper in place was a little worn out so the caliper was able to rock back and forth ever so slightly as to cause the bang... can you tell what area of the truck it is coming from? Can you do anything that makes it stop or get worse? Regarding the other problem, it does sort of sound like a hesitation problem, definitely think about re-building your carb.

its coming from rear i think. i do have a snapped ebrake in back. going to go buy the stuff to completely redo the rear brakes. we will see if that fixes it. these are drum brakes of course.
