Dead Battery Q

The kids like to leave the interior lights on in my rig (not my truck) and kill my battery. I took it in to AZ to have them test it and the guy puts it on his tester which tells him to charge it first. When he puts it on the charger the voltage is real low or something and instead of charging it he tells me that it's dead since the voltage is below 12. Isn't that what happens when you leave the lights on, the voltage drops?

I have the feeling he just wanted to sell me a battery instead of charging it and putting it back on the tester. Am I being paranoid?

You found a real old timey salesman. Screw the future...sell for today! Get it re-charged and put it back in the truck.... keep the kids out of it! hehehe

If you have other symptoms, then yes I would get a new battery. The voltage should not go below 12v unless a load is put on it. With it just sitting there, putting a voltmeter on it should give you around 12v. If you get 10 or less, then the battery is bad.

Now if he had one of those load testers with the resistors in it, then yes the voltage would drop below 12v if the battery is just discharged, and the battery still may be good.

If you have run this battery down like this more than 2 or 3 times, then a new battery is not going to be a waste of money. These batteries are starting batteries, not deep cycle. They are not designed to be run completely down and re-charged, and can be permanently damaged.

So if you are having problems with starting, besides leaving the lights on, the battery may be ruined.

What I was thinking was if the only problem you have is the truck not starting after the lights were left on, then the battery is probably good. If after charging the battery you are getting slower cranking, or no crank at all, then a new battery may be needed.
