Im driving home 2 days ago and look down at the gauges and the "battery not charging light" was bright on and the voltage gauge is showing below 6 volts, I barley made it home(the engine doesnt need battery power but, the tranny sure does) anyway I found a battery was dead and replaced it, I also took the Alternator down to Autozone and had them bench test it,they briefly put it on there tester and said it was showing 14 volts output. I took it home reinstalled it with the new battery and the other one charged and it started right up, however the "battery not charing light" is staying on, and when I reved the engine from idle to about 1400RPM's the light goes off, back to idle and the light goes on. Any ideas?
You need to see what kind of amperage it is putting out.
Just because it is putting out 14 volts with a new battery and one that has been charged tells you nothing.
If it is fried and putting out 14 volts and 1 amp you are going to have a dead battery real soon once again.
My 86 has an external voltage regulator behind the passenger side battery, that could also be the problem.
Dirty battery cable clamps and/or battery posts could also be a reason for not charging.

i ahd a very simler problem this summer. driven along and the engine just died along with the radio at just the same moment i touched the power window. here id been drivne for a day or two with out a working alternator and apperentally a stuck volt gauge. when i tried to but the window up it drew the voltage low enough to shut the fuel shut off solined on the ip pump off. luckily i had my handy flashlight with good batteries to jump my ip pump and it died on a hill so i could roll start it and get home. so i took the alterntor over to my local autozone they "tested" it found it bad and gave me a new one. i asked them to test the new one since i hate getting a bad part from the store. the new one tested bad also. they then tested another one wich tested bad. they said that there machine should be able to test them but somtimnes cant. okay wich ever i took the one with the lifte time warranty and put it in. it worked solved my problem and its garentted for life. so if it gives me grief it wont cost nothen but five minutes to swap it out.
Luckly theres a place in lewisville called alternators unlimited that does nothing but rebuilds alt and starters, they are not poened on sunday, but Im taking it there tomorrow, the last time I had it rebuilt (it was completly siezed up) it cost me 35 bucks to have it rebuilt and it has lasted 3 years so I'm going to take it to them to test also. Thanks for the help
