I'm getting ready to shackle flip my rear to get rid of the blocks this weekend cause I have some mean alxe wrap goin on. My plan is to use my original hanger from the front of the leafs and move it to the back and hang my shackle down from, and then use a front hanger from a 79 truck cause it drops about an inch lower then the original 91 hanger and bolts right in. I'm using stock springs and need to get 6 inches of lift outa this.
Now I need to know what the best angle on the shackle is gonna need to be to get the best articulation, and also if anyones has any tricks to getting that angle right with the least amount trial and error?
Will I be able to stuff my tire better after flipping the shackle? It would make sense to me. I know i wont get the droop I have now.
Well, here's how I would do it. First, I would compress the springs to about where you think they will actually be most of the time. Then measure from the eyes, and at the middle measure the height of the arc between the imaginary line between the eyes and the bottom the spring. Now that you have the length and the height, you can sketch it on paper and figure the shackle angle.
Since you are replacing both, I would start with the front hanger back towards the rear of the truck 1" from stock, and then set the back hanger once the front is in place.
To get it right the first time (or close anyway) you have to take themeasurement while your rig is together now. Regardless of the shackle configuration the spring still has the same load on it, so measure from the fixed end to the rear of the spring while you have a load on it, and then make your hanger location corrections. The only real variable is the length of the shackle, but with a stock shackle you will find that the rear hanger will have to be relocted about an inch to an inch and a half forward.
Measure forst to verify.
I did a shackle flip on my '69 back '98 and love the way it works. I however did not think about getting the shackle angle "correct", I placed the hanger so that the center line of the bolt was still in the same position. I used another set of front hangers for the rear. The shackle is set at an angle from the factory. The performance gain from adjusting the shackle hanger 1" one way or another from that probably would not be noticeable to most drivers. Just my 2 cents. Keep it simple.......
Measurements should get me pretty close to where I want it. I think I'll tack the hanger to the frame in a couple places for the first try then put weight on it to see how it looks, if it looks good I'll bolt it up and try it out. I want to go with the same idea as hav24wheel about having the shackle just about to bind at full compresion so that i can get the most drop i can. Ill post up how well it works, thanks guys
You would get axle wrap unless you mount some sort of traction bar. You might want to try and contact sky manufacturing for the shackle flip. They have a shackle reversal kit that I had planed on getting when I had a Bronco. http://www.sky-manufacturing.com/new...uct.php?id=180
